Nelson Longflap - what a fantastic name.
Wish I was called Nelson Longflap.
Oh well.

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Oo err!
JP - you can change your alias to Nelson Longflap
Thats the same colour as my Camper - lovely. The campers have a wooden dowel fixed inside lengthways, presumably to eliminate 'swing', and it works in my experience. There are slots in the back of the bag to feed the fixing loops round the dowel.
New carradice has arrived. Lovely but I am not allowed to use it until Christmas :(
Something short in black and white might look nice on the Surly, Hmmmm....
Don't put yourself down, Smudge ;)
:-))) cheeky blighter, I meant a Lowsaddle longflap... short enough to sit on the front of the rack (hopefully!) and available in funky black with white fittings (as any fule kno) ;-)
Tho in fairness you've got a point, in the right clothes I could be described as "something short in black and white" :-o
Just got a lovely Carradice saddlebag, but to my surprise it came without straps to attach it to my Brooks :-(
What's the usual form? Do people use toeclip straps?
Smudge, that must be a mistake, they all come with straps (either to fit to saddle, or to SQR etc).
Going with the theme of good service, suggest checking with shop purchased, or contact carradice direct - sure they will sort you out.
Thanks Nelly, I've emailed the shop so we'll see what happens.
Apologetic email received back and straps despatched within 15 mins of my specifying which ones were missing. So far so (very) good from SJS Cycles.
SJS have been excellent in my dealings with them. They and Spa Cycles are great for touring-type things
Just stumbled across this while hunting for something unrelated...

Steveo, that pouch looks great - iwantone !
(I did put this on my new bike topic, but realised it's probably quite useful here, for the Carradice affectionadoes)
Excellent timing Dave, I'm just trying to decide on a bar bag. It'll be on the hardtail so width is much less of an issue but droop is more of a problem, got to keep it of the suspension fork crown.
I was thinking the Junior but I think i've just convinced my self the Barley would be better, its wider and shallower than the Junior.
If you'll be at PY tomorrow you're welcome to inspect.
It's pretty stable, and compact (if I wanted a big bag, I'd have a large saddlebag, or a pannier).
Very much doubt i'll make it, we got a volunteering day at Hopeton house clearing paths etc....
That's the thinking, its only to take my work stuff when I've got the baby seat on the back and can't fit the Nelson.
@steveo, I picked up a 'vintage' Junior saddlebag on fleaBay. Unused. Has the old Carradice logo, big reflective red triangle on back. Black with white straps, lovely blue cotton lining, bit of dowel along top inner. No LED loop though.
Haven't used the thing in anger yet, due to lack of eyelets under saddles to connect straps to (no Brooks you see). Tried bodging arrangements with toeclip straps, etc. but not working. Either after-market saddle bag loops (pricey) or the old standby, cable ties, may be necessary.
I've been looking on eBay, did this time last year too.. but they're so expensive most of the time your only saving a few quid over buying it new from Wiggle.
I had a similar problem, decided to go with the QR block for the Nelson; Saves pulling stuff out the bag when I get to work, I just grab the whole bag and take it with me. Plus it gives the bag a handle. Its expensive for what it is but it makes the whole saddlebag arrangement so much more convenient.
we got a volunteering day
Ah, we have them at work too. Someone "volunteers" you to do it :)
The plus side of my volunteering day is that I had more stuff than I could fit in my little dry bag. So I dug out my little saddle bag I modded earlier in the year, it wasn't a very good saddle bag because of the closure mechanism but upright on the bars it'll do nicely.
I measured the length of bar I had spare isn't as much as I though and even the Barley will probably foul the brake hoses the this little bag is small enough to just fit. I think I may have a project in the new year.... Always wanted to (re)learn to sew....
I haven't had the chance to listen to the latest episode of the bike show podcast yet, available via the shows website or itunes, but Jack Thurston visits the Carridice factory

Looking through the 'Bay today I see that vintage Carradice bags are fairly easy to come by. But is it proper to be a mere whippersnapper with SPDs and disc brakes and all that newfangled stuff but with a 30 year-old cotton duck bag slung from one's bike? I agree that scuffs and mends and faded black are badges of mileage, but what if the bag is actually older than the rider? Is that cheating?
No matter because my Super C panniers are still as black as they were last month. But now I have a nearly-new Super C saddlebag in the post.
I think Carradice ought to start making sandals.
Suits you, sir.
Ah, now that's a useful photo! Which bag is that? I'm thinking of getting a Carradice for commuting and credit-card touring instaed of a rucksack (which gives me back-ache after too long) but I can't work out what size I want. Mind you, if biketrax still have a wall of Carradices, all I need to do is go there.
I was in BikeTrax yesterday and bought a second seatpost QR mount so I can carry the bag on t'other bike as well. The bag itself needs a bit of TLC - daily commuting has made the wooden bar that holds it rigid at the back come loose. Absolutely nothing to do with sotpping at the shops occasionally on the way home and testing the design limits loaded up with dress down Friday clothing plus weekend alcohol in the back....
p.s. can't see the photo above, but I've got a Nelson Longflap, and it's definitely big enough to act as a substitute for a backpack.
