and whisky in front of the fire is calling

We could pop round after as that sounds like a great idea ;-)

Sure my lights will give up after one lap... glad I don't have dynamo lights.

Forgot to charge mine last night, so gave them only a quick squirt this morning.

I'm geared up for a short commute, so it will be interesting to see how long they last on full beam - odds are, longer than me!

Think I'll probably be there tonight. Went round last night to test lights. As long as I go downhill at the same speed as I go uphill then they're not too bad.

Looking forward to the post-ride whisky at Anth's.

May come tonight if the times work out, but for one slow lap only as my bike will be well weighty (not too mention the cakes that I ate today - meeting fodder).

I'm coming from the Commonwealth Pool end - is it better to go round to the lake by the cycle path or the road?

we tend to ride the road as speeds are a little excessive for a thin bumpy shared use path, and once you hit the roundabouts its only a short fast pedal to the loch.

A grand, record turnout of seven - if I'm not mistaken Ruggtomcat and Laidback on recumbents, Dave on MTB plus trailer, Amir and Roibeard on flatbar uprights and Jackson Priest and myself on drop-bar uprights.

A bit of a smirr going on, but another lovely night.

    See you all next week!

I rewarded myself with a swing back through Marchmont for baclava. Yum!

That was fun (esp as only did one lap). Weather was perfick for cycling up hill.

I partially chickened out and partially couldn't make the loch for 6.15 since I finish work in Morningside at 6.

I may do my own Hilly Wednesday to see if my fitness is anywhere near par. If it really isn't, then I'll maybe come next Tuesday with my camera.

When did you set off riding?

strange to see the sea of twinkly lights waiting for me at the loch, lovely session but the first lap was intense! legs felt like blocks of wood at the top. Thats what I get for trying to follow Dave, even on a moutainbike with a trailer! Bit easier after that, not!

I think if anyone can't do 6:15 (or 6:25 if Laidback is in charge of leaving Marchmont O'clock!) Then a plan would be to wait either at the barrier at St Mary's Loch or at the roundabout at the bottom of the descent (end of the one-way traffic) where the road in from Duddingston meets the road downhill to Holyrood. Those are easy places to pick people up - even easier if you shine your light up the hill so we can see you waiting and not zoom past!

I 'enjoyed' it too. Seemed to get strangely easier as it went on. Although that might be because it got slower! Had a fleeting temptation to do a 5th lap as I cycled back towards the loch on the way home, but had to get back to my burds. That's my excuse anyway.

Very nice to meet everyone too.

18:15 starts would markedly reduce my weekday-evening bairn-interaction time but just been thriceround (but with three Abercorns and two Meadowfield Drive returns to compensate) and saw only one other living human person around the hillroad (and possible sign of one other above the ruins).

@All - Thanks for keeping me company and waiting guys - I'm sure the subsequent laps were quicker without me!

BTW, on the later laps did anyone find my lungs, hacked up somewhere on the ascent before Dunsapie?

@Roibeard. Ha. I cough my lungs on that section every week but a little higher up each time. And it takes less time to get them back in again. Keep at it.

    Sorry Amir and Jackson Priest...

Appreciate people coming by shop though - even just to shout 'we're leaving without you!'.

That was a good effort tonight. It does get easier...

Actually just put two and two together - I had been despondent that even the bloke with the trailer made it up more easily than I did...

Dave, trailer, blog, audax, mccraw.co.uk... PBP!

    *blushes*

ERC members, audax celebrities, long distance performers

I was definitely with "proper" cyclists!

Thanks again for making a newbie welcome!

Anyone fancy joining me on the Pino (post maintenance, and assuming some lights can be jury-rigged)?

I'd thought about asking for volunteers for company of the Helios too :)

@Roibeard Save blushes or stress by comparing climbs against a clock, which gear you have to change down to, where you have to start standing on the pedals or how far the imaginary needle rises on your internal knackeredness scale, but not against other people.

You saying your normal companion is a 'passenger'??

No, but she doesn't understand that if she can still talk while pedalling up a hill, she is not pedalling hard enough!

I think I'd rather do this in the light anyway, why climb a hill if there are no good views?

There are still views at night, with interesting highlights like the glowing sign of the oatcake manufactory.

The way the castle comes into view between the two embanked sides of the road, jsut before the start of the descent is wonderful - works just as well at night I seem to recall.

Quite like the sound of Hilly Tuesdays, hopefully will be able to attend some time.

  29. I love the views of cities in the evening with the lights all out. Can get some great photos with the movement of cars and so on below as well.

@wingpig Blushes were down to my ignorant audacity, rather than comparative performance.

Mind you, it's just further proof of the inclusive nature of the forum - I wasn't made to feel out of place!

Personal performance was that I didn't get into the lowest gear, didn't get out of the saddle, and felt that a 2nd lap wasn't beyond my capabilities!

@SRD the night-time advantage is that the road was closed, so no impatient drivers tailgating...

Of course, sometimes the road is closed during daylight, so best of both worlds.
