"it's just further proof of the inclusive nature of the forum - I wasn't made to feel out of place!"

Yep, clearly quite a few people find interaction on (and off) this forum surprising (in a good way).

Not sure if this is (real or imagined) cliquiness amongst/between cycling 'factions' or the isolation of 'on-line' or notions of 'human nature'.

@SRD No, but she doesn't understand that if she can still talk while pedalling up a hill, she is not pedalling hard enough!

Something Laidback has trouble with too!

The Top in darkness is magical, and thats not just the endorphin rush speaking.

Count me in for next Tuesday. I'm just back from a Monohillular Wednesday and I was sensible enough to go at a sustainable pace, since I couldn't entirely remember where the ascent ended. Didn't stay in the saddle long at all, given I'm on 63" according to Uncle Sheldon but it was very comfortable, absurdly pretty, fresh and quiet.

The worst thing was before setting out. I rounded off one of the stupid Allan bolts on my rear hub when flipflopping it and had to trade them with the fronts. Need to calm down some when tightening things, strongn00bscum error.

Good effort RDNA - I've done it on 74.5 inches and that ain't fun on the knees!

Oh....recombined DNA. I am slow metaphorically, as well as physically.

I am likewise impressed; meandering as my progress was, I did thank my usually-cursed low gearing. Descent will be fun when I try that fixed.

    This post contains one lie.

Consider this your reminder to either get your excuses in early, or remember and charge your batteries up for some Tuesday rotations of the seat at approximately 615 for 620 start

I'm going direct to the start as I was a bit pushed for time last week (going via marchmont).

I'll be at the start also. Have to fix wheel-rubbing before though - not sure it is due to leaves or the muguard.

Sounds a bit like a Network Rail excuse

  13. I think you should turn it into a sort of CX ride with the south Arthur's Seat road closed. Ride down to Duddingston Loch then shoulder the bike to run up the steps to Dunsapie Loch (and repeat).

Touch and go - I may come for one lap to show off the Tron wheel, but work is such that the call of home is a little stronger.

Hill training - the ultimate way to shrug off work pressures. What about training for the Etape?

Work pressures include doubts over whether the job will exist after the end of the year - I don't think I'll be trying to get a place, no idea at the moment whether I'll be able to afford it or not (has to be bought through registered tour companies).

Anth, I think they go on general sale this week - 18th or 19th I seem to remember. Think it's £80 for entry. I tried pricing it all up to do it independently a few weeks ago and gave up when I got to about £600 though. Not cheap!

No, exactly, I'm beginning to wonder that if the job works out then go down for a long weekend or something, see some friends who live in Pau, and ride some of the hills myself without the pressure of the huge group (started reading about it and it does sound like chaos on some of the climbs making it really hard to get a rhythm up).

    Etape d'Anth if you like...

  22. Ah sod it, I'll come along and see how soon on the second lap I feel like keeling over.

Also, the rest of you can tell me if the Tron wheel is as distracting as Wingpig has suggested to me on Twitter - will I be causing crashes rather than just making myself visible?

Only expect to do two or three laps - again will see how I feel, but a breather for some photos is likely to be my get-out on one of the laps.

By the way you "only" have to go round 19 times to have gone up the same climb as Tourmalet... Of course the 3/4 of the lap that are on the flat / downhill kinda help to recover inbetweens!
