The overall distance spent climbing for those 19 laps (20,900 m) is only 13% further than the Tourmalet climb too - so not actually that less of a gradient.

  2. I think the only there is justified - is that definitely right? Hmmm, might become a bit of a boring day riding, but would be an interesting measure...

I might possibly make it for one lap, but I have No.1 son to pick up at 5.45pm, then have to cycle to Barnton to pick up a Gumtree bargain before 7pm...

If I make it I'll probably be on the Ute (assuming the front disc is no longer rubbing). I can lift it up and down stairs (as long as the load is light) but the frame design precludes shouldering it.

I'll be there. Got new batteries so I should be able to see the road ahead a this time.
What's the official meet up time?

It'll be a most fine distraction from course work especially if Anth's wheel is there!

I wasn't put off by last week, but I won't be there tonight because I:

have a squash match/need to do some more bike maintenance/picked up an injury at the weekend/need to put the kids to bed/insert generic excuse here

Bit disappointed to miss Anth's spokeworks show - didn't Specialized commission some music to accompany this?

    Specialized music - early!

I'll aim for two laps next week though...

    Single Speeds for all?

I wouldn't wait at commie pool roundabout to be honest, it's too hard to see anyone - wait at the next roundabout where the bottom of descent meets traffic coming up the hill. You're out the traffic and more visible there. 610ish.

Does any one else see "Firth Of Forth" printed all over that map if they swap to "Birds Eye"?

Microsoft are clearly not nautical folk...

And for joining the 1st lap half way round? More like 6.25ish?

Yes sounds about right, at the bottom of the descent. You could always start cycling up and round the "wrong" way until you meet the oncoming peloton!

£14.99 for the pleasure of a half lap, plus shipping.

Also, got home to discover that the slight discomfort on my thigh is actually a huge slash with fatty bits and everything - disaster!

Oddly, it hasn't really bled, so as I've got to do some more work over the VPN, I've duck-taped it shut.

    Sigh.

@Dave I don't understand what happened? I think you peeled off just after I got there.

Anyway Nice to meet you all even if it was so dark I still wouldn't recognize most of you. 4 laps and back to polwarth is 18.49 miles. just the kick up the ar53 need in these winter months.

Yes, it was good too meet all. That sounds nasty Dave.

I was pleased with my stats. Average 25.7 mph with a max of 120. Perhaps I need more foil on that light!

oh dear Dave! Get some wire brush and Dettol in there sharpish to disinifect!

I think I made the right decision to walk the bike home after puncture (top of hill, lap 3) - just pulled a lot of bits of glass out under the big light that probably would have done for a replacement tube.

@recombodna - I stacked it at low speed at the rendezvous point (went over the front wheel on some kind of wooden stake thing) and tore the shifter in half, which is a bar-end one.

Unfortunately the uber sharp metal has nicely carved out the tip of one finger (flap put back in place) and left me with about 4" sliced down the front of my thigh, which was gaping open with gristly bits in. Bizarrely, shorts seem OK..!

Great turn out... a dazzling display of non-comformity. I noticed....

      • Fixie with ice tyres

      • first folding 'contestant'.

      • bar end lights

      • hub gears with drum and coaster brakes (exhibit and exhibitor should be in full working order next week)

But the odd thing was that I got home at the same time despite only doing 3 laps this week. Yet the cycling seemed faster? How could this be?

Plus I supppose that with more bikes there will always be something to fix or repair.

went over the front wheel on some kind of wooden stake thing) Yes... that's Historic Scotland for you.... !

Blimey, Dave. I hope your First Aid kit contains more than just Duck tape! Might be worth having your GP take a look pronto in case you've picked up anything that diluting Savlon can't sort out.

The back tyre of my bike suffered a Faerie attack today, which delayed my ride home from work. I did stop by LBB en route to say hi to Laid Back (and a presently arriving Kaputnik) but was too tired and had too little food in me to go galivanting around Arthur's Seat!

Was great meeting ya'll tonight and seeing some lovely bikes. 3 laps were enough for me but +1 next week I recon.
    Get some pics up Dave.

The Anth show won pretty hard, yus.

Thanks for waiting on me before the second lap, folks. Silly bike'n'tyre choice meant my descent/flat was arguably harder than my first ascent.

Good to meet more of you, and watch that injury like a hawk, Dave. It sounds plenty deep enough to get infected pretty unpleasantly.

    Tonight I learnt:
    - I could be fitter
    - My 'good' light is not a very good light (could do with new batteries mind)

    Good evening though.

Dave - that sounds pretty awful, hope it mends.

Kaputnik - sounds like you made the right descision.

    Posted 13 years ago #
  29. Ouch Dave! Sounds awful! And to think you were playing about with that wee finger cut... Ya big softie!

p.s. get the leg seen to properly. Duct tape is manly n' all - I hope you cleaned it out with WD40...

Sorry I didn't make it. School run, dinner then Barnton run to fetch a child seat to perform surgery on to fit on back of Ute.

@ Dave, sorry to hear you cut your leg open. Take care with that and please go and see a doctor, you will probably need stitches and a Tetanus jab.
