As some of you will know I've been answering this muppets over the top Clarkson-esque comments on the EN and Hootsmon websites over the last day or so. Mainly because the months of anti cycle/car drivers are victims nonsense is really getting up my nose.

So please, if you are inclined, feel free to join in as I appear to have started to annoy him (http://www.scotsman.com/the-scotsman/transport/crackdown_on_phone_call_drivers_1_1977896 ) by pointing out every time he bleats that the laws are clear, they are there for the general good, and deliberate criminality is criminality whether it's breaking a speed limit you disagree with or robbing banks because you think they can afford it....

Of course in real life we know little is black and white, however for the sake of winding up bigots I'm prepared to adopt a relatively extremist position, in the name of a sporting challenge naturally :-)

There used to be a popular meme for "do not feed the trolls" :)

True... but when the trolls shout their lies long enough and loud enough unopposed they become "what everyone thinks" or to paraphrase Goebbels "If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it."

I feel this guy has been shouting his prejudice so long on these (EN & Hootsmon) boards that it's time to give him a little poke to remind him (and everyone else) how foolish he looks. Before the lies becomes any more accepted. It is all the little places such as these which help to create the "them and us", as with any prejudice and reinforce the "outgroup" image of normal people who happen to be on bicycles, or indeed obeying the speed limits.

  5. Crikey - he was always a bit 'frothy' in the past, but appears permanently 'apoplectic' now!

"when the trolls shout their lies long enough and loud enough unopposed they become "what everyone thinks" "

    That's a valid point

Anth and I (and others) have at various times put various comments on driving/cycling stories.

But after a while you tend to leave them to it.

Reporting 'offensive comments' might be more productive.

A(HA)FH is ever present. Wonder what he does when he's not posting or driving. MAybe he doesn't actually drive!?!

Seem to remember he also has a motorbike.

"Seem to remember he also has a motorbike."

Wasn't that fluffy duncan or whatever he's called?
(ahh yes, "Duncan in Edinburghs Fluffer", assuming that's not an impolite thing to repeat on here!)

  11. As chdot mentions, a few years back I took it upon myself to 're-educate'. It's funny how you can get people to back down and become civil when you know what you're talking about.

Doesn't take long for the frothing to start again though!

Also, if there are a steady stream of comments promoting the middle ground (or even, heaven forfend, the pro-active transport argument) the clarksonites can be made to look like a fringe group.

    Little nibbles in every area....

@Steveo, why thank you, but as I watch the comments I see I am not alone ;-)

Funniest bit was when you were accused of driving a Volvo.

lol yes, I can truthfully say the only Volvo I remember driving was an FL7 artic, the one I did my test in! (Though I have a vague memory of driving a rigid one when I was working as an agency driver) I seem to remember that when the seat was far enough forward to comfortably reach the pedals I couldn't reach the exhaust brake with my heel (perils of being a shorta***!)

  16. Damned site won't let me log in, or register a new account.

I drove through Newbridge towards Stirling in both directions yesterday. Not down to one lane in either direction...

    40mph over a mile = 1m30s
    50mph over a mile = 1m12s
    70mph over a mile = 51s

Mr Fuel Head is frothing over losing 18 seconds.... Even compared to the normal 70 limit it's just 39 seconds...

    Off topic...

FL7's were nice, good solid gearboxes but alway felt little low to the ground. The MAN's were nice and I also liked the newer Scanias = hundreds of buttons to press.... The wrost were B and C reg Fords whilst working for a flatbed haulage Co in Leeds.

He's very similar to a guy we have on our intranet, ex forces, climate change denier, anti red tape/H&S, and every other cliche under the sun.

I think the one lane bit could be on the M9 spur, but haven't actually been that way since the roadworks.

Drove the M9 today. Far more civilised and felt much safer with the avergae speed cameras installed.

But I'll never get those 18s back.

I had visitor to showroom today who gradually edged into the 'menace of too much cycling of the wrong sort, in the wrong places - ie Meadows' . I gave him some free CEC cycle maps - hopefully not made things worse (!)

You can usually count on Artemis and Road Raga to bring some balance to the EEN proceedings.

@mgj: He's very similar to a guy we have on our intranet...

Funnily enough, I've been thinking much the same about our learned correspondent's similarity to a most prolific and forthright chap.

    And Kirst, yes, very bad.
