    False alarm.

Looks like it's going to thaw.

    Why it snowed

Change in wind direction and drop in temperature. No doubt Pentlands had an influence to cause snow in Edinburgh but not, it seems, close by.

Snow still on Arthur's Seat and the Crags. Tops of cars facing north too. Slushy on the streets. Forecast is for more snow tonight. I'm off to put snow tires on the hybrid. Maybe snow/slush/ice lying tomorrow morning on way into work...

My tyres mock this feeble dusting and bay for the blood of more.

Well, admittedly I was riding superslow because I took my racer in to the Bike Works for a new bracket and cranks and had it slung over my shoulder.

Been out for walk. Southern part of Pentlands well covered with snow. Pavements and railway path has occasional icy slush from hail.

I am considering whether to go out for a spin. Bit paranoid about snow showers. On other hand I have an annual target to reach (168 miles to go). Will get the turbo about to try to keep the cold away (didn't work last year).

I hasten to add the wheels weren't on.

@Uberuce, reminds me of how I got the 653 frame back from Waverley station after picking up in the wilds of West Lothian. I did have a big bag to help hold it, then straps over the shoulders, courier style. Forks were sticking out the back a bit, but the frame was light as a feather, my shoulders hardly noticed...

Very icy on the road up to Thriepmuir Reservoir this morning. White but fell as hail not snow. Then if froze. Quite a few walkers and cyclists braving it.

Winter tyres (Schwalbe Snow Studs) are now on the hybrid. Probably keep them on until the end of February.

Went for a ride to Longniddry. Roads fine - wind a bit cool ;) Saw a bent taxi on side of road next to a sad telegraph post.

Icy pockets on the cycling side of MMW about 15 minutes ago. A bit dicey coming downhill.

    Nice map.

MMW supposed to be a 'priority pavement'.

Seems to quite icy in parts despite air temp > 1 deg.

that map would be good with a route planner feature
so you could ask for the route via gritting routes where possible

Or the reverse. Steel frame bike with ice tyres means I'll avoid the salt like the plague

Indeed. My hybrid is aluminium, but after last year's salt bonanza I decided to swap out the wheelset entirely for the winter tyres. I picked up a pair of old Rigida 36 spoke wheels with XR hubs as part of a job lot with the wheels for my single speed. Pretty good nick, nothing special but robust. Even an 8 speed cassette on the back: ideal. I slapped the snow stud tyres on the Rigida rims, took the Alex wheels off the hybrid, then on with the Rigida ones. Hey presto, winterised.

Main advantage is not having to pop Marathon Pluses off (PITA) then Snow Studs on (also bit of a PITA). Just whisk the QR skewers off one set of wheels and onto the other. Computer spoke magnet and reflectors take seconds to swap across. V-brakes line up just fine.

Only downside is the gear indexing is slightly off: can't get onto the biggest sprocket. Could recalibrate or just leave it until it too becomes a PITA: maybe not soon as I very rarely use it anyway.

The KB weather station and my digital thermometer reckon it's somewhere between zero and half a degree outside, and there's a heavy frost developing on the cars outside.

I'm wondering whether I should deploy spiky tyres tomorrow, although the Beeb's forecast thinks it will warm up a few degrees by the afternoon.

Think I'll be on the road in from the airport tomorrow, avoiding the crunchy half-decomposed leaves on the bike path. Slippy enough when wet.

It was snowing in Morningside as I rode to work, but it's sunny and warm cold down in Leith. And my Marathon Winter lost two studs during my commute, despite me desperately trying not to jack-rabbit at every green light.
