  1. May I suggest some Christmas Fayre?

I'm unlikely to make an evening, time's not going ot be much of my own in the run-up, so I will leave the organising of the where and when on that to someone else (Spitters?).

But I can do a morning coffee, complete with the now-traditional (well, it will be if we do it again) swapping of gifts of unwanted stuff from the garage/shed/kitchen drawer (baking implements shall be deemed to count as bike bits for the day).

Wednesday 21st December - what say ye?

(and someone feel free to jump in and sort out the evening! German Market gluwhein?)

    You mean PY, or not?

wed 21st perfect (mother-in-law arrives thurs).

I'm up for an evening but spitters says he's left the forum again after another 3 posts spiked.

Can we have proper pub? Dagda nice/quiet. Guildford close to trains for DaveC?

  4. Guildford gets my vote if I can make it.

And chdot, aye, PY was my intention unless there is dissent for an alternative location!

Anywhere else central-ish with ample parking and seating?

    Wed 21st should be possible.
Anywhere else central-ish with ample parking and seating (but which isn't the rack-proximal Starbucks on the other side of the block from PY)?

  7. There's a place next door to Trotters opticians I think? Wellington Coffee was mooted at one poitn (is it open at that time?). Artisan Roast is good, but teeny with little parking (and is it open?). Victor Hugo?

    "Wellington Coffee"

    Tiny.

  9. Yeah, just figured we could monopolise and colonise if there early enough.... ;)

Wellington is probably open but is teeny and the coffee really isn't much good (despite anything Stepdoh might otherwise assert).
Victor Hugo might be a bit cramped with eight or nine of us but is very nice (Union rather than Artisan Roast) (though has once or twice not had much cake early in the morning) and there are plenty of railings to chain up to (with no 'no bicycles' notices thereupon).

Cummon WP, to be fair the coffee at wgtn is a long way away from not much good, considering the vast majority of stuff served in a cup in edinburgh.

guess it's horses for courses though I'm not a huge fan of artisan's roast, bit too tannic (verging on burnt).

I don't drink coffe so I gfuess I don't mind where, so long as they have plain builders type tea (think I upset the lady at PY last week).

XXX to SRD for thinking of me in the evening location. Are we having an evening drinks? Or is itonly morning Coffee/Tea?

I don't mind the date so long as I have a week to let SWMBO know.

Artisan's is OK in a you-can-see-what-they're-trying-to-do sort of way, though Union's is reliably nicer (judging it by the output of Victor Hugo, Rock Salt and Relish). Hula manage Artisan stuff quite well. Not sure whose beans they run but I had a nice cup from the Multrees Walk implementation of Valvona & Crolla a couple of years ago.

Artisan's [Artisan Roast - coffee-shop on Broughton Street and supplier of roasted coffee for a number of other coffee-shops] is OK [is drinkable but not my favourite] in a you-can-see-what-they're-trying-to-do sort of way [they make a point of explaining that they don't use boiling water as it singes the beans and so on], though Union's [Union Roast - another supplier of grounds and beans] is reliably nicer (judging it by the output of Victor Hugo, Rock Salt and Relish [coffee-shops in town who make coffee using Union-supplied beans or grounds]). Hula [coffee/smoothie shop on Victoria Street] manage Artisan [...Roast-supplied beans/grounds] stuff quite well. Not sure whose beans they run but I had a nice cup from the Multrees Walk implementation of Valvona & Crolla [the precise name is apparently the VinCaffé] a couple of years ago [actually more recently than I thought: on 18/10/2010 I popped along to briefly join the Anth-organised flashmob in protest at Multrees Walk's security personnel getting uppity about enforcing their imaginary 'no photography' rule. A photo of me holding the cup in which the sampled coffee was served is visible in Anth's Flickr stream.].

    Coffee, the new helmet debate.

nah we're all agreed that you shouldn't wear coffee on your head

Can I suggest captain taylors coffee house on the north bridge? You cant get much more central, the coffee is excellent, they have a large seating area downstairs and lots of bike racks just over the road in Hunters square. If that wasn't enough you get a free mini danish with your coffee and all the profits go to supporting streetwork.

Ah, now I see what your talking about. Gosh you do know alot about coffee in Edinburgh.

I'm with nik on this. Don't wear a coffee on you're head.

Coffee. The main criteria for me are: will it give me more energy when riding my bike, and will it screw up my sleep patterns?

Not at all, I just like to remember where to not bother returning to.

@DaveC Nescafe is positively lovely compared to the dreaded lukewarm coftea delivered in a grubby looking Norge container...
But yes, beer is better :)

Smudge I see we have even more in common! Are you my twin brother?

Those norge containers are fab. Would love to have got my hands on one. For those clueless, imaging a vacume flask rectangular with a 25ltr capacity.

Lol, not that I am aware of. I believe you can buy Norge containers surplus if you really feel the need. Might not do good things to the all up weight of your bike but you'd be popular at the stops on a chilly day!

Would cyclists do range stew instead of cake though? :-/

So no cafe needed then. Smudge can have a "Norge" of nescafe on his bike and DaveC can bring that which is full of tea and we can dine al fresco?
