I prefer this to the warning of yellow snow (or was it a yellow warning of snow?) as issued yesterday.

It's supposed to be nearly 40mph tomorrow afternoon! According to BBC Weather...

Not a good day for a cycle. Today was nice, if a bit blowy and a tad chilly.

and the 40mph is the constant speed - gust up to 75 for Edinburgh!

@steveo, make sure it's a single decker though. High sided vehicles + 75mph gusts = no thanks!

More yellow snow on Friday?!? Not a good commuting week, took the motorised bicycle yesterday and coming back late in the evening was very unpleasant with concerning glazed patches on the motorway and a solid coating of (very slippery) frost over every road in our estate :-o
Today, on the grounds that the met office is certain that we'll see storm force winds, I'm taking the c*r and Mrs S will be working from home. :-(
Stay safe out there peeps, it could get interesting!

Took the bus, although it's currently okay to ride. I suspect I'm make the transition from disappointed to satisfied to relieved as the wind picks up.

    @splitshift

I'm sure you won't need to be told to be 'safe out there'.

Presume your company will agree if you decide it's safer to pull over and wait for the worst to pass.

@Min, lol, don't forget to use "galegate"* in the aftermath ;-)

*Another pet hate, adding the suffix "gate" to random words because the writer is too lazy to think of/look up a suitable sentence using REAL WORDS grrrr ;-) Almost as annoying as the Beebs habit of, hours after a story, "here is our outside reporter outside ten downing street/at the scene of todays earlier incident" when there is no-one else about, nothing happening, and absolutely no point wasting money sending out all the (expensive) equipment and staff involved in outside broadcast!
(Steps off soapbox and wanders off mumbling)

Back on topic, if things pan out as expected I shall probably slope off at lunchtime...

@Chdot "Presume your company will agree if you decide it's safer to pull over and wait for the worst to pass."

No offence, but that made me chuckle sadly, in my experience the attitude of most transport managers is "you're supposed to be a professional driver, get out there and drive, if you wont there are plenty other drivers who will and you know where the door is" :-(
    There are exceptions, but....

No offence taken - just that today seems to be billed as a bit unusual - not least with wind coming from west and you going north south.

There will probably be pictures of blown over lorries on the 6 o'clock news.

    A forecast for today

I have to say that between 8 and 8:30 this morning there was no wind in Edinburgh. I even rode with the trailer on the basis that the lane of swerve room it gives me would come in handy, but no dice.

Much windier on many occasions earlier this year.

    Hoping for wildness later.

Ah yes, adding the suffix "gate", that is annoying. And all because of Watergate Gate... ;-)

I don't suppose there will be any scandals involved though as I don't expect the wind to prevent "Merkozy"* from continuing their Eurozone battles.

*This was on The World Tonight last night. I actually think Robin Lustig was enjoying it.

  27. T'was fine riding in (I'd even taken the more sheltered route in to avoid the wind and had a nice tailwind up the tunnel... [/frankie howerd]

Picking up now though. We're on the 7th floor here and the windows are starting to get a bit of a battering. The thing I'm most worried about is getting home and seeing if our chicken run is still in one piece.

@anth I assume when you were over-engineering the run that you installed eyelets in order to guy the thing more securely down in high winds?

Seemingly little wind this morning until I was pushed six inches to the left going along Johnston Terrace. Only saw two other cyclists compared to the usual fifteen or so. The trees I can see in Rutland Square are waggling quite enthusiastically at the moment.

Currently it's a bit windy, but not much worse than some days we had last month and in October. However it is supposed to get a lot worse by 3pm. I'll not be heading out on two wheels today: the crosswinds and gusts are just too strong.

    Posted 12 years ago #

It was specifically to avoid Johnstone Terrace that I took the Innocent. Been quite a few days riding down there that a gust has been somewhat... exciting... Didn't want to chance it this morning.

As crowriver says, things could get interesting by 3...
