The Christmas Morning ride

I think it was myself, Ruggtomcat and PS on Twitter but we tossed around the idea of a wee ride around town on Christmas morning to take advantage of the quiet streets. And by the look of the advance forecast, weather should be with us for ice and snow-free streets.

Anyway, I certainly intend to saddle up and spin around to work up my Christmas lunch appetite. Particularly seeing as seasonal passing illness laid me up on the sofa for 5 days last year over same period.

    Anyone in?

  2. Would love to, but I think this year is the first Christmas morning Mel and I will have ever had on our tod, putting her dad off till the following day, so unlikely. And we might be riding out to Aberlady Bay later in the day as well anyway, so not missing out at all! :)

I'd like to get out at some point but it'd have to be something short and sharp and stupidly early (such as a castle-Leith freewheel challenge at 04:00) whilst the rest of the household sleeps.

I'll be down south for Christmas. What's more, my Christmas gift to my long suffering wife is that I am not taking my bike. I should be back in time for a ride on New Year's Eve or Day though.

Not me, got visitors and kids to look after. You might consider teaming up with the Edinburgh 20 milers, who are organising a group ride for Xmas morning. I might join in the Spokes "mince pie run" on 8th January.

In the nicest possible way, I think 10 miles in 2.5 hours might cause a slight speed incompatibility...

About 1/2 hr for riding, rest for cake?

Christmas cake? Can't stand the stuff. Best left in bus shelters as far aways as possible. Woolfords springs to mind.

Good energy properties for cycling though

@kaputnik, you might be better off waiting for a CTC or ERC run then*. Agree that the 20 milers thing seems more like a gentle pootle, even with No.1 son on the tagalong reckon I'd be outpacing that rate of progress even if taking it gently. Though I suppose speed on shared use paths depends on the terrain, surface, number of chicanes/dog walkers/bored yoof/ice patches/glacially slow toucan crossings along the route in question.

    * Addendum - CTC ride Xmas Eve, 10:00 start. ERC ride Xmas Day, 09:20 start.

10 miles in 2.5 hours... thinking about it, that's a brisk walk, surely they'll be a bit quicker than that?
    (4mph counting on my fingers)

Regardless, I'll be in Englandshire and bikeless so can't come out to play :-(

Yes I think they'll be faster than that. Mike is being excessively cautious re: timing. Best not over-promise, people have turkeys to get back to.

I'll be going on the ERC Saturday morning run on Christmas Eve to get the speed out my system anyway. Sunday Christmas thing was more of an idea for something a bit more loosely agenda-d and social, making full use of the lack of traffic to ride the streets less ridden. Such as castle Esplanade...

I'm still up for this. Still not sure on route - may just be a random weave around town. Would be good to drum up as many yuleriders as possible, even if we don't ride en masse.

Most of my thoughts on routes seem to be around steep streets and excessive effort (eg, Canonmills to the Castle, big-ringing the Royal Mile). This may not be the everyone's (or, for that matter, my knees') taste...

    West Approach Road, maybe?

I'll be up in rural Tayside with nowt but my Dad's BSO for company. Seriously thinking about taking the wintersaurus up on the train with me since I'll be there for ten days and I'm not sure if I can cope.

I'd be up for a big-ring pavé haul UP the Royal Mile. Last one to the esplanade is a something-or-nuther!

@Uberuce, to relieve the cabin fever you could always visit Cycleworld in Arbroath and eye up a few nice bikes. Very good price on a 2010 Ridgeback Panorama!

It seemed too good to be true, and in indeed it's a second hand frame that they've built back up. I didn't look closely enough to see if they've used the same components, though.

Thats same as my tourer. They don't specify any of the components they've used - Panorama off shelf comes with Deore XT all round (hubs/brakes/derailleurs) with Tiagra STIs. Some sort of shifty Alex rims that aren't up to the job, Blackburn racks front and back, Ridgebacks own saddle.

I've replaced the rims on mine and added a front rack as dude I bought it off had kept/lost it or whatever. Put Brooks on it and some far more fetching yellow mudguars. Apart from that same as new. Think I paid £725 middle of last year for 2010 model.

Well if you are stuck in rural Tayside, I just thought it could be interesting to go and see the bike. They seem a reputable enough shop, but no substitute for seeing exactly what components they have put on it...

I can't make Christmas morning as I have a family to look after, but a local small goup are planning a New Years eve ride from Dalgety Bay/Inverkeithing. We cycle out to Crossford, up and over Cleich Hill and down to Loch Levens Larder for sugary cakes and tea followed by a ride back to Inverkeithing. All welcome, and pm me if you want more details, or check out Forth Bay Wheelers on Facebook.

I'll be taking the wintersaurus oop north now. The plan is currently to have my sister pick me up from Dundee train station in her estate car, but the idea making me giggle is to phone ahead and say I slept in and will be a few hours late, and thus arrive in sunny Forfar on the bike, to surprise of automotive family.

Cyclestreets puts a cruising balanced journey at 19.5 miles, which is by far the longest single journey I've taken, but I did that distance yesterday in the course of commute+2xArthur's.

Sounds like a good plan! Here's Dundee council's own cycle map which shows various routes through the city. Yellow streets are quieter, as with the Spokes maps. I doubt heading straight up Forfar Road will be the best option unless you want to mix it with fast traffic.

For when post-lunch boredom sets in, here are some cycling routes round about Forfar and further afield.

Oh, and don't forget these folks:

Oooh, that'll do nicely. Thankee again.

My sister's in Broughty Ferry, so if she's finished work by then I might detour to hers for a fuel stop(she can be relied upon not to ruin the surprise) and that sets me up nicely for the back road, which I know pretty well.

Now I just need to convince myself it's best to flipflop the hub and tyre so I can coast the rolling hills.

The cycle out to the Ferry is very nice in the most part.

Considering some of the climbs en route to Forfar, maybe not a bad idea!
