"cycling in for the first time since summer before last"
???
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Petrol over 130p?
and diesel over £1.40! :-o
One note of caution I would respecfully add to the long haul commuters who favour minimal clothing and cycling hard... I'd suggest a warm top, hat and trousers in the bag/pannier, all it takes is a properly split tyre/buckled wheel ten miles out and you could get very cold very quickly this time of year (without teaching granny to suck eggs!).
Feeling guilty, a(n unplanned) late start and a large/fragile load to move meant I'm diseasel powered today :-(
"!We are given thermal socks, almost up to the knee, for use in reefers"
I find marijuana works better........
Following on from Smudge, I've taken to carrying my buffalo jacket thing around for occassions when the trains get a bit dicey. Half an hour sat on an exposed station platform was enough to firmly engrain that in the mind
I have the waterproof Endura top, spare gloves and fleece hat in a wee rucksac. I did stop this morning to meet a mate on the way in at Kirkliston and it was cold very soon.

My standard winter wear is:
long sleeved base layer
long sleeved lycra cycling top
waterproof jacket
buff
hat (hat and buff form a balaclava which can be adjusted to whatever condition).
Cycling shorts
Thermal longs.
Neoprene overshoes
If it's really cold, 2 base layers.
was too warm today in the thin kull cap covering the ears, however they didn't freeze, noe was warmer behind the nicely vented filterless mask. Was a lot warmer than I expected
Have you got a biscuit crumb under your "s" Spitters? :-)
@spitters, you only wore a skull cap??? You must have frozen you're bits off years ago I guess?
"...nose was warmer behind the nicely vented filterless mask..."
If you grew a long enough moustache you could then comb it upwards to form a hairy windshield for the tip of the nose.
My usual winter gear is a t-shirt, waterproof jacket and shorts. (Summer is essentially the same but the jacket goes in the bag.) This is usually enough as once I get moving I warm up and I don't have a very long trip. This is fine as long as I am moving but I decided to get the train back home on the very worst windy day we had at the start of January. I overestimated the time it would take to cycle to the station, got there too early and had to hang around. I got shivery cold very quickly. (The train was going to be half an hour late as it happens so I ended up cycling anyway.)
If it is very cold, I'll wear gloves and longs as well - on one of the very cold mornings I really could have done with something under my helmet as well.
Speaking of 'freezing' - both Duddingston Loch and the Canal are frozen over.
The loch had a couple of foxes on the far side using the ice to get about more easily.
I was toasty warm on the run back tonight. No hat but good socks.

Yeah I took my gloves off around dusk - not that much warmer than this morning, strange.
Already swapped the winter wheels off the hybrid. Supposed to be a frost on Saturday night around the Forth, rather than snow. So, do your riding before Sunday morning!
Yeah, mine came off this week. Lady wife never bothered changing from slicks... bah!
Off skiing next week though so wintery blast is fine by me :)
Wintersaurus is now a slickly tyred singlespeed spring mochine. If it hadn't been so blustery out just now the silence would have been eerie.
This, combined with crow and Dave taking theirs off too, plainly means snow and ice is coming within days.

Shhhh! You'll wake up Jack Frost. He's having a wee snooze somewhere around Cairngorm...
