Has anyone else noticed there are new white lines in Melville Drive? Could this be a new cycle lane going in?

New white lines in Melville Drive

It's near the end of the financial year so all sorts of things will be happening.
Think I was told this was 'related' to the closing of Meadow Place, but I don't know any details.

... but will they have enough white paint to do the lane that has ben agreed outside Hotel Mussoni?
I also note that the Meadow Place route seems to have some interesting kerb work. I trust this will make it nice for cyclists without the usual obstacles....

Yep, was going to post about it yesterday, but just didn't have time (oooh, get me all important...)
Always thought the place the inevitable 'END' painted on the road appeared was a little premature. Although entirely in keeping with the UK method of 'put them where the road is wide enough, not where they might be of practical use'.
They still need to take the lines ALL THE WAY to Tollcross, but it's still an improvement of sorts. My wonder was whether the new bright white lines (and they ARE bright, but still driven over) will be filled in with new red?

"My wonder was whether the new bright white lines (and they ARE bright, but still driven over) will be filled in with new red?"
I'd like to be wrong but....

Isn't usually done the other way round? The red goes down first, then a white line is run down the edge? I have a feeling that the white line is all there is going to be.

But hey, given it's in both directions they can add half a mile onto their quoted cycling provision...
Eeh, we're a bunch of cynics. But perhaps rightly so...

Is that a solid white line or a broken white line?
Posted 14 years ago # -
Solid. I saw them this morning. Shiny.
Posted 14 years ago # -
??? I thought it was broken... (and therefore not a mandatory lane - though as mentioend earlier it's still at a bit that's wide anyway, and cars aren't generally that close to the kerb at tha point).

Needs double yellows as well...

Though of course in my flying mammal dream Melville Drive would be shut between Marchmont Road and Argyle Place.

Anth-they are definately solid just before Melville Drive becomes Brougham Street because I thought "ooh solid lines". I may have to go back now to reassure myself..

Broken lines all the way along melville drive. Didn't notice the bit at brougham st though.

@chdot "Though of course in my flying mammal dream Melville Drive would be shut between Marchmont Road and Argyle Place. "
But of course they will do that, when they bring back the plan to put a fly-over across the Meadows (it has been proposed)...

Better take a video-cam so we settle this on for good...

I have video evidence! They're broken all the way!

Better fix them then - before Min goes home...

Think we need a site visit.

Great excuse to go to the Cloisters, or Dagda, if heading the other way.......
Posted 14 years ago # -
LOL, I would like to point out that I was nowhere near either this morning! ;-)
Posted 14 years ago # -
You must have been near Cloisters - but then again...
Posted 14 years ago # -
Okay I was near but not actually inside and partaking. :-p
Posted 14 years ago # -
I expect you were just going so fast that the broken line was a blur.

I was heading east just now and the lines are nice and bright in that direction too. They've scrubbed out the 'end' and added new little white bikes but sadly the big bike in the ASL had not been redone at the intersection.

@chdot I think you got a photo of Min there... ;-)

Myself, I think without red the effect is rather minimal.. I had to drive through the meadows at the weekend and noticed all the cars were driving *in* the brand new lane between Marchmont Rd and Tolcross.
Perhaps it takes a while before drivers acclimatise to it? But I couldn't help thinking if it was coloured, there would have been none of that.

But given that cars are allowed to park in cycle lanes (red or not) surely they get the message that they don't count? Red in ASLs seems more significant to me.
Obviously, I'd like to have better lanes, but the mixed signals sent out about them renders them kind of pointless.

Chdot/Kim, you're both rotten! :-P

"@chdot I think you got a photo of Min there... ;-)"
presume you're referring to the yellow jacketed blur (wasn't actually going that fast - low light/slow shutter speed)
"Chdot/Kim, you're both rotten! :-P"
can't speak for Kim (not aware I've ever met), but I'm fine most of the time
