So, how would I go about figuring out if my n+1 with 700c wheels would fit the 40c width that's all that Chain reaction still has in stock?

    Measure.

40 minus whatever the current ones are is likely to be the (extra) space you need before you hit the mudguards (though the studs might be higher, and you'll need a grit gap).

no mudguards on bike at the moment, which makes it a bit easier, will need to get a rack though.

    700x40 is a big tyre?

    How many rows of studs?

I bought a wheel and put a two row of studs tyre on. Just flip it in and out. Only going with front. It has been on three to in four years? Still keeping the hard winters away until now.

700x40c is a 42mm wide* tyre, and is the same width as the 20" Marathon Winter (42-406)

Not sure why CRC thinks it's helpful to not specify using the ERTRO system though.

When snow conditions centrally heated drivers make the torpedo too much of a hassle I'll use my crank-forward. Last winter it worked well with my Ice Spiker on the front and fat Panaracer Pasela on the back.

    * and high, more or less.

Not sure why manufacturers think it's helpful to not stick to the same system accurately!

I've got some very fat tyres marked 33.

About same size as some 38s!

ACycles in France has Schwalbe Winter studied Active Rigid Tyre in size 700c 30mm, they also have Marathons and other ice tyres in stock

I just bought 2 they cost £25.49 each plus a combined delivery charge of £3.99 delivery to the uk, £10 more in total for the pair than chain reaction but a lot cheaper than the next best price.

My Schwalbe Winter active 700, 30 studded tires I fitted around 2 months are starting to come through. I have had 4 puntures since fitted one a protrusion of foreign object, one a valve failure the last 2 due to studs coming through.

I changed the rear tube 2 weeks ago and noticed a stud coming through. Yesterday took it to Halfords as flatted on way to work and cold outside. They took off a few studs the ones coming through.

With my other studded tyres always fail eventually. Yet wonder if these narrow ones quicker to wear as can go up to 100psi. I was running from 60 to 85 depending on when checked air.

Wondered if I should run lowest PSI to reduce further spike intrusion

I use anti-puncture tape stuff on the inside of mine. It has also helped prevent blowouts from the tube protruding through the holes left by studs which had been torn out.

@Ed1, my first winter tyres lasted me one winter, again being punctured from the inside multiple times.

Last year I put duct tape on the inner side of the tyres and also used a non winter bike whenever it was mild and I still have the same set of tyres after 1.5 seasons.

Even at the cost of 1 set per year is equivalent to only 2 weeks train tickets for me, so still well worth it....

Another flat on the back tyre in kirknewton tonight, had to change it road side as was a quick puncture. At least getting better at changing those narrow winter studs, Snapped 2 halfords tyres levers luckily had a back up decathlon big strong one.

Another flat, I tried to fit plastic inside wheel protectors but was so ridged I popped a tube putting it on. I then only had one tube left. The country explorer comes with car types valves on 700c 30 wheels hard to get tubes that are not balloons. So have to order some more on line. I have been trying to fix my old tubes with a pound shop repair kit I got 2 years ago. Although not done a great job so far did think in principle must not be too hard to fix tubes. I have spent more on repairs tubes and plastic inside wheel than another tyre. Next year I may buy a spare although may try convert my bicycle to wider rear wheel that takes 35m wheel as those larger wheels seemed to work better. Also my rebuilt with stronger spokes wheel at the back has several broke spokes. At my weight and weight I carry on back the narrow tyres take a pounding may be.

Some one at work said to try liquid stuff that goes inside tyres, but all reviews on line are say that stuff is bad.

Pretty sure Harts warned me off the stuff very strongly at the last commuter challenge

Liquid stuff inside tubes? Apparently a number of new cars come with this gel and no spare wheel?

I put it in snide some tubes as it was cheap years ago in Asda Livingston.

Gave up when a bottle of it emptied over the inside of my pannier.

Crazy string is the same or similar?

Was present when an over-pressured tube exploded while on the train. The owner said he'd been experimenting with "pushing the envelope" on the pressure front. Left a large green tacky puddle on the floor of the train. It was easy to identify which train I was on in future as apparently that stuff stains quite well.

    I may regret this...

When fixing a rear p######e tonight caused by studs poking through, and the weather set fair warm for the next week I put on a summer tyre rather than a new studded one.

Didn't seem worth battling it on and then taking in a couple of weeks anyway.

(Still have studs on the front, mind)

After 8 punctures from studs coming through I gave up with rear tyre and ordered a new one line. It arrived 2 Fridays ago, but not fitted it yet as not been bad weather.

Swapped to bike with studded tyres today as plenty of snow when I left home. Today I am multimodal. So having driven to Ravelston, I had the pleasure of riding on studs on wet and flooded roads.

I left mine on and rode them in today. Don't need the studs but the gears will be handy if the wind stays backwards all day.

    Looks interesting...

    https://retyre.no/products/urban-winter

"With variable weather conditions its important to be able to easily adjust your tire surface in order to have good traction and to avoid unnecessary wear that occurs when studded tyres are used on bare asphalt. reTyre Urban Winter is a studded surface that attaches on top of your regular bicycle tyres using zippers. No tools are required and since Urban Winter is foldable, it requires little space and can easily be brought with you when you are unsure about the conditions. "

"reTyre Urban Winter is designed to fit most hybrid tyres (28" with a width of 40-44 mm)."

I removed my Schwalbe Snow Studs this evening. Only five studs gone on the rear, though they've probably only done about three weeks' commuting in total, spread over a few months.

i was about to take mine off when i saw something about temp drops. but probably not below freezing?

    Hmmm....

Was feeling smug during this week's snow & ice that my laziness at the weekend meant I still had studs on when I had intended to take them off.

Not feeling so smug now that I had a visit from the P Fairy this morning - probably from the studs being pushed through. No point fixing it without changing tyres so a long walk home :-(

This set just about lasted their 2nd winter, but not sure it was a bad enough winter to merit them, but glad of the reassurance that having them on brought.

I took them off a couple of weeks ago having not really needed them. The snow on Tuesday wasn't any bother on Marathon +.

Longstaff had had Winters on it for a few years as I don't use it at any other time of year now.

Throughout the rest of the year, when tootling about the Skelf or regretfully continuing along a setted street I occasionally think how nice it might be to have fatter tyres, but then on the ice-free winter days when I have to lug >40mm spikes around (wincing every time I hear a rutted surface grab at the studs) I think otherwise.

Having just taken my studs off, I was looking for some for next year.

This sale looks pretty decent if you want to stock up for next winter...
