    Gap between UK cities 'widening'

The gap between the economic performance of UK cities is widening, a study says, with six times more dole claimants in some parts of the country than others.

    ....

It said cities that had performed well, such as Edinburgh, Cambridge and London all had strong private sectors, and high numbers of skilled residents and "knowledge workers" - those who work in professions such as law, accountancy and finance.

Radio 4 discussion said some places - like Leeds - had done better than other 'traditional (post) industrial cities' by being 'nice places to live'.

It's not surprising that Edinburgh is in the 'top' cities. It's never been particularly industrial and the breweries and big engineering companies have mostly gone.

I'm sure the ability to walk and cycle around 'easily' - plus a good/cheap bus service - all help.

    Important to improve such things!
