nope - this probably means he's getting something on the boat repaired
he's usually moored along by the Ashley Terrace bridge which as even closer to me would make an excellent choice for new PY meets - also his coffee is awesome, cheaper than PY and he's a cyclist himself

Hmm i have never seen this anywhere else - it's a different colour to the other ones based at Ashley Terrace. I pass this route daily.

I walked passed this at lunch time, I don't think its the same boat as at Ashley. Seems a better place for it too.

Boat went through late Saturday night, broke up all the ice - made quite a racket. Must be that one? Was surprised to hear anything moving - I thought the liftbridge etc was closed.

@Steveo - can you throw up a picture of it?
I wouldn't say it was a better place as it is hidden from passers by with cargo, has to compete with cargo and zizzi etc for cutomers, out by Ashley he gets plenty cyclists on route into town and walkers heading out of town, not to mention parents (like me) from the local school.
That said I do believe there was a story about a boat being pulled over by the waterways authority for moving through the ice (apparently they're not meant to for multiple reasons) so I'm not sure the cafe boat would have moved
also I do now seem to recall the Ashley cafe owner saying there were 2 cafe boats on the canal right enough... either would suit me fine for a coffee tomorrow morning (assuming they open early enough which could well be the killer for the plan in my mind)Posted 12 years ago # -

Not got one to hand and It'll be dark before I'm released this evening, but I'll get one tomorrow if you still need it.
There are quite a few people who wander along the canal at lunch time they may be going for that trade, though that basin is woefully utilised part of this is probably the overly tall buildings hiding every thing.

I like the nice looking little standalone building with the spiral staircases either side which has sat vacant since it was built. Would make a cracking wee office.

Clearly someone imagines it's 'worth' more than potential clients are willing to pay.
Some of the other Edinburgh Quay shopfronts don't have commercial tenants.

It only opened on Monday.
It's run by two people called Alison and Alison and they're dead keen to make a go of it. It's called Basin Bites. No idea what the coffee is like :)

Cool cheers allytibbitt. I'd love to make that the next destination for a Friday coffee. We could check it out for child freindliness (perhaps not including any wee life saving devices).
p.s. SRD we have a wee 15kg limit life jacket which would fit Bram. You're welcome to it on the proviso, you pass it on to someone else for free when Bram grows out of it (or perhaps any other offspring you may have in the future) I assume You're daughter can be trusted on boats now?

Its probably the only nice building in the basin, would be a lovely office but I think Chdot is right some one clearly has overly optimistic views on its rental value. Any way of finding out?
The "churn" of pubs etc round the Quay is ridiculous. When our office moved up here we got a discount when the golf simulator placed opened, a few months later we got a discount for picking the bar clear on its closing night. There just isn't the foot traffic round that corner, shame really.

I like this idea, a guy did a similar thing on the union at polmont, just up from the station, he sold great bacon butties, and lots of great local stuff, but the boat went to Kilsyth and was then sunk !

chdot - just zoomed your photo - Prices pretty keen, in line with Snax cafe in Buchleuch St I would say, so pretty cheap.
£1.00 for a coffee/cappuccino, £1.50 for a filter.
£1.30 for a hot roll, doublers £2.00
Porridge is £1 which is good value - our office its £0.64 but thats subsidised.
Yum, I can see black pud / tattie scone combo slowing my commute already.

I've been digging and digging this evening, and I still have no idea who owns the nice little office building. OSM doesn't know. Dave Henniker doesn't know. Edinburgh Quay phases 1 and 2 refer to the larger development on the north side of the basin.
The Basin Bites menu looks great!

I wish I had taken some photos but a couple of years ago very interesting sight on the canal was a khazi/crapper with seat situated just by the Learmonth bridge, set in ice...and was there for a couple of weeks...cappucino serving barges phooey.

Yeah problem with that barge is - no on board seating where you don't freeze to death. As it has fryers etc you wouldn't be allowed in they just sell to the passer by and I would be doing just that, passing by and not stopping to talk (and freeze to death)
I go one further and propose we go to Zazou which is at Ashley and a coffee is £1.60 in a double cup caffitier. There's 12 seats (and he sells pucture repair kits for the passing cyclist) Trouble is I think he only opens at 9 but I'm sure if we say there are going to be 12 cyclists wanting a coffee and flapjack at 8 he might make an exception...
