  1. Have lost patience with them. Puncture riding home on Friday; different tube in on Sunday, puncture on the way to work today. The tube I put in had come from the deid Peacemaker, which also has Twin Rails on and I noticed there were already 4 patches on there.

Love the CX tyres I have on t'other bike, so I think I'm going to get the same set and play about with the guards for clearance (should work). The aesthetic of the amber sidewall will be lost, but on a daily commuter in Edinburgh the general grime takes care of that anyway.

Aherm.... Schwabe Marathon Plus... Sorted. I mean Anth, its not as though you do hundreds of miles a day commuting so the lack of weight saving will surely be made up in lack of punctures.

  3. Which is why I'm going for CX tyres - because they also add in the comfort factor over the various cobbles and poor surfaces.

Yep, Schwalbe Marathon Plus. As the strapline states: puntures are a memory, and I would add, a distant one at that!

Marathon Pluses on my hybrid for 18 months now. Still the same inner tubes, never had to remove the tyres from the rims in that time. In comparison, the Specialized Nimbus Flak Jackets on the bike before that lasted just over a year with no problems before developing cracks in the sidewalls and a string of punctures subsequently in rapid succession.

    700C M+ available in 25 and 28mm varieties, as well as chunkier 32, 35, 38mm.

Maybe its because I exclusively use the roads but I rarely (touch wood) have puncture problems and I'm running light weight "training" tyres on the racer and have been for the last year. In fact, and i know this is a stupid thing to write down, I've not had a puncture on the racer in the last 12+ mths,

I've had trouble with the single speed but the tyres on that are appalling and tend to pinch flat if the pressure is <110psi.

I hate hate hate marathon plus. I have a 25x700C unused going spare if anyone wants it. My CX tyres are pretty good. I get the odd puncture but its not big deal.

Friday puncture - south road of Arthur's Seat
Wednesday puncture - Mountcastle Drive North

Hmmm...have had a couple of punctures on tandem running Marathons, and TBW tells me that tyre has a 'bulge'. Had been planning to put Marathon Plusses on.

Min, why are you so negative?

Which proves the old adage of, get 73 cyclists in a room and you'll have 97 different opinions.

I once went for Gatorskins on recommendations of many, but for me they were Hamsterskins - the opinion on those tyres is as divided as on helmets.

The Halos are great tyres - grippy in the extreme, but quite fast rolling. Just after not-too-long-a-time they have deteriorated to easy-puncturability.

Like I say, I love the CX tyres I have (Schwalbe I think as it happens) and, touch wood, haven't punctured those yet.

"get 73 cyclists in a room"

    How do you do that?

They were a horrible nightmare to get on. I really can't tell you how bad. Then after struggling for hours to get the rear one on I punctured the tube. I then couldn't get the tyre off and had to cut it off with a knife. Never again!

Never had to do that but have had similar problems with (unknown) skinny tyres.

Part of the problem is usually rim profile.

@steveo - I've started sprinting, can you update me with a more accurate location of aforementioned free tasty snack within the next few hours?

Interesting. This seems to be a reason given by many. Maybe it depends on the exact tyre size, rims, etc. Personally I find them not too difficult to put on or remove, though due to relative stiffness/thickness of the tyres getting them seated right while putting them on initially can be tricky, they tend to come off again. I have found a technique that works for me just using my palms to press the bead into the rim, others use cable ties to hold them in place while seating the rest of the tyre.

I put 23mm Gatorskins on my single speed, and they were an absolute beast to get on the rims! I was convinced I'd never manage to get them on at all, it was so difficult. I'm dreading the thought of taking them off to change the tubes...

On balance, for puncture resistant tyres I'd go with Marathon/Marathon Plus over Gatorskins, based on my (limited) experience.

Anth is organising it, something about trying to solicit 93 opinions... :D

Problem is people just started debating on what types of roll to have, as well as the relative merits of ketchup, brown sauce, mayonnaise, sweet chilli sauce etc etc etc. Then there was back bacon versus streaky. Smoked versus unsmoked. Wood smoked, maple cured... I'm sure a mathematician could tell us the potential number of different combinations available...

  20. I still fancy trying a BYOB (Bring Your Own Breakfast) morning for Bike Week. Nothing formal at all, just a bunch of riders. Need to have a word with Kaputnik about a poster...

24 combinations given the options stated above, assuming that wood smoked and maple cured are subdivisions of 'smoked' and that you're not fussed about the order your bacon rolls appear in. Sorry, I get so little chance to actually use my degree.

I promise not to debate, just eat.

BYOB good. I could also be convinced to do Pancakes at Polwarth (if I can get help with washing up - would also have to negotiate free access to church kitchen, should be possible).

    Posted 12 years ago #
  25. Is there an open space around there that could be used? Was thinking Meadows but the promise of pancakes...

Harrison Park? But also church garden. Suspect I could get support/access, if desired.

Meadows definitely best option for BYOB.

anth; brown, seeded, white soft and white crusty rolls would bring you up to 96, and as a special favour I'll dispose in a sustainable manner of the excess half dozen.

  28. So SRD, one pancake morning, one BYOB?

Go on. Say yes and I'll get organising... :)

Yup. I'll make the pancakes (fluffy oaty ones), if I can get some volunteers to do coffee/tea, and whatever else y'all want with them. Plus cleaning up.

Big question is if I can negotiate access to kitchen/ hall. I'll look into it. Preferred dates?
