The former residence of Sir William Arroll is not near Edinburgh, some of his works certainly are.
As well the world famous Forth Bridge, one of his first jobs was producing beams (some still visible) for the Balerno Branch.

Brand and Son let the ironwork required for several bridges as a sub-contract. It was taken by a young Glasgow engineer William Arrol, who had only recently set up in business on his own, and had capital funds of £250. He subsequently moved on to be the main contractor on the Forth Bridge, on the opening of which he was knighted in 1890. His Dalmarnock ironworks, erected in 1872 and subsequently enlarged, was the largest structural steelworks in Britain.
