Here...
Tho9ugh it appears to be more about Mark Beaumont... ;)
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 16years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.
Great picture (of everyone but me). I was concentrating on not running over Roibeard's youngest :)
Really positive article and very good picture - well done all.

Looks like you were falling asleep (must be all that hanging around!)
ENews comment -
"
Good to see the News picturing bicyclists behaving badly by taking up the whole road, not having proper lights and failing to keep both hands on the handlebars.
"
Suspect this is more humorous than some comments will be.
I'm now feeling compelled to read the comments for a change.
Take heart though, that nothing could prevent the bilious outpourings, as we're already being criticised for being unlit, in broad daylight...
Robert
"
Good photograph: 4 not wearing helmets ( not that it is mandatory mind you), Only 4 actually riding on the designated cycleway, most with no lights.. The only thing missing in the photo is a red traffic light for them to run through..
"
(I can only see three without helmets)
I was being careful to stay the correct side of the line. There's a red traffic light behind us we could have asked to be photographed riding through red on.
Cripes, the comments are getting depressingly horrible...
Time to go wildlife watching.
"So all you sanctimonious cyclists...from that picture above, not all have lights or head protection or gloves or hi vis clothing. I would dread to think what kind of serviceability your "vehicle" was in too. And you want to be let loose on the roads??"
Some of you weren't wearing gloves? You irresponsible no personal insults.
Poor commenter, living in dread of the thought of the serviceability of bicycles which were able to be ridden to the shoot location along roads.
It's true that the three evil riders on the photographer's right are committing an offence by riding on the pavement.
Otherwise, I've cast my critical eye over it and can't find any other violations, although there are numerous bits in conflict with the Highway Code (both hands on the bars, helmets, luminous suits, and ONE IS EVEN RIDING WITH THEIR EYES CLOSED!)
Yeah, the gloves thing got me too...
page 4 in hard copy. top half. not bad. picture of mark beaumont inset.
I was looking at the little kid's tyre as he had stopped unexpectedly!
I wondered what was going on yesterday as I was coming down MMW and saw the group assembling. Sad that you've managed to score a bit of an own goal by spreading out onto the pedestrian side of MMW. The opportunty for the commentards will no doubt not be resisted. (I cant read the EEN comments as it is bad for my health)
I am sure that the cyclists in the footpath area were taking action necessary to avoid an accident, e.g. avoiding crashing into the back of a child cyclist who had braked suddenly. This is perfectly legal under the provisions of the Lothian Regional Council (Middle Meadow Walk, Edinburgh) (Cycleway) Traffic Regulation Order 1984.
Obviously, wearing helemts, gloves, hi-viz, or using lights during daylight are not legal requirements. The only legal requirement on the "serviceability" of a bike is that it has working brakes, which I am sure all these had.
It's easy to get wound up by the EEN comments. How representative are they? Is this just a handy output vehicle (!) for a small minority?
Of the first 48 comments almost all are anti-cyclist but they (the anti ones) come from only 11 different posters.
It would be interesting to know who these people are (probably perfectly nice if you met them in the street no doubt).
It's just hilarious because commenters are complaining that cyclists have no training - which is actually something the manifesto for PoP is calling for!
As for whether the views are representative. Sadly I'd say yes. Most won't be so bothered as to comment on the newspaper site, but it has entered the public conscious that cyclists ride on the pavement and don't use lights. Funnily enough my neighbour, lovely old guy in his 80s, was telling me all about cyclists riding on the pavement just last night.
They come from 11 different usenames. Whether they come from 11 people or 1 person and 10 sock-puppets is another question.

I agree. This is why I think it's important not to bother engaging on these subjects, because it's an unwinnable position. Only when cyclists stop being an out-group will the majority be able to tolerate them (by definition).
Oh man, you've just given me a photo idea for my next free night...
"This is why I think it's important not to bother engaging on these subjects...
Equally, and I know you agree, it's not a reason to engage in those activities and, I'd suggest at least, we should be allowed to chastise those who DO engage in those activities. Arguing it with Joe Public really does get more and more pointless though.
That we've annoyed them that much makes my heart sing.
...and a publican neighbour gave me an insight into the (possible) mindset behind these kinds of comments. He said that the smokers standing outside his pub who see me regularly cycle past told him that they were envious of me. Seriously.

Loving this comment..
It's a staged photo-shoot, and to fit people into the shot and work with the light, some minor crossing of lines was neccessary. About 40 minutes were spent trying various shots, including both riding and standing on the grass (and including me having an embarrading clipless moment!). Of course it is missed entirely from the photo that the group waited for some time to ensure the path was entirely clear, and only started moving when there was nobody in shot, or approaching the shot...
You could never get it "right" to appease these pathetic comments trollers, whose only daily exercise is to race eachother to be first to post a hate-filled comment on a freshly published article.
What matters is that we got ourselves in print, including a picture, and a usually can't-be-bothered publication was bothered. No amount of bile and vitiriol diminishes that. And like Tom, I'm glad that I've worked some people up into such a frenzy and increased their blood pressure so much that they've felt compelled to waste their day trolling a news article for a minor local newspaper article.
Kaputnik, I think what you have all achieved with POP in just a few days is amazing. The level of publicity you've got would shame a PR Officer: art-work, press coverage, Twitter feeds, a website that's been found by Google indexing and growing popular support. I hate to ask you this but do you have downloadable link banners to put on other sites?
good god those comments make me feel sick
I've noticed that the EEN commentators are aware of CCE... better not mention our connection to SPOKES and the red phone (that fixes potholes within 25 minutes) or the huge stream of road tax we're funneling off to personal bike projects ;-)
"I've noticed that the EEN commentators are aware of CCE... "
Yup Incandescent and his various alter ego's are already missing me apparently :-o
