Cyclestreets imports take around a day to import, and then need to be manually switched in, so if all goes well we should see these changes going live into cyclestreets from Monday morning.

    http://www.cyclestreets.net/journey/help/osmconversion/#import

I was trying to decide if it was worth adding in the footpaths into OSM, but I didn't have much time to walk around it this afternoon, so decided not to.

I'm very glad that my commute by bike doesn't involve having to go near Haymarket.

"I'm very glad that my commute by bike doesn't involve having to go near Haymarket."

I think it's going to be pandemonium for people walking to/from Haymarket Station!

There's no way I'll be able to wheel my bike along there against a train load of east bound commuters!

"There's no way I'll be able to wheel my bike along there against a train load of east bound commuters!"

That's what I was thinking - PLUS ped jam, people in both directions (even with no bikes).

    Any Risk Assessors on here?

LOTSA pix of general area - map info not all correct.

    Perhaps...

that pedestrian 'access' for Haymarket station is crazy!
Its bad enough with the normal pavement and spilling on the road.

This should be signed as a cycle diversion (allow for tall building GPS fail - Canning Street really now sorted) -

    http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=1502263

With a cycle lane on the Western Approach Road.

Heh, yes, came round the corner pushing the Brompton this morning and saw that narrow corridor and thought "oh great" - at least at 7:40am it isn't that busy. That corner is often a problem - you get a big truck trying to deliver beer to the pub just there sometimes. At least that set up will force the pavement cyclists to get off and walk. I hope...

People looking for company, I'm no help because I only go as far as Haymarket station from Gorgie.

Not sure about eastbound, but westbound the current temporary arrangement suits cyclists heading into Dalry Road. (there's nowhere else to go!)

Just watch the Morrison Street / Link junction as there is a left hand cycle lane with no ASL so you are liable to get left-hooked by traffic making a left turn unless you plonk yourself over the line and visibly ahead of the vehicle.

    dear god that was frustrating!
took me miles out of my route - next time i am jumping onto the pavement and pedding it through the path past the church to get from Palmerston place to Manor Place and along William/Alva St as usual (they should be dead quiet too) Melville Street was chaos, there were hi vis'd up steward standing watching the flow of traffic (or lack of) getting scowled at by just about everyone.
Corner of Morrison and Dewar I waled across the pavement to avoid a set of lights and buses

@bluejeangirl - if you're reading this I hope it didn't put you off and that you made it in OK. I'll be on the road again tomorrow if you need company.

Oh yes, and yelling "OI!" at the top of my lungs at a sleep walking ped crossing Palmerston at a red man was amusing, the look of jarred awake on his face and the smiles from the peds that were standing still doing what the crossing told them..

Well Haymarket was a bit tight at times this morning -

I saw quite a few bikes. Only one woman actually rode through. Most weren't going to the Station, but pushed round to Haymarket Terrace.

Hard to see that they really need to barricade off the whole taxi area for 'tram works'.

So much for Edinburgh trying to encourage cycling!

    Indeed it was.

Still, at least the narrow pavement prepares you for the "everyone through one narrow door" then "everyone through the one manual barrier, with the luggage, buggies and bikes" that is to come inside the station.

In fact, it's probably just as well Haymarket station is so badly designed: it restricts the flow onto the pavement to a low level...would be impossible without tolerant staff.

    More details (with maps) -

    http://www.edinburghtrams.com/include/uploads/local_update/TW_155_West_Maitland_Street_Final_100212_2_.pdf

No doubt they are still working on cycle diversions...

Updated PDF maps from TIE here:

    http://www.edinburghtrams.com/include/uploads/news/West_Maitland_Street_notification_TM_24.03.12.pdf

Note that the only available crossing of West Maitland St is at Palmerston Pl/Torphichen Pl. The update doesn't mention cycling.

The thing is, we have to go and complain to the Victorians about Haymarket station - I assume knocking the thing down and starting again (or building some more space on the front) isn't an option.

Strangly (and I don't know why they haven't already done this) they could open up the south side of the bridge so flow could come and go from both ends, doubling the capacity?

"I don't know why they haven't already done this"

    Been suggested a million times.

    Always comes to nothing.

    Partly 'private road'.

    Partly 'staffing'

Ought to be possible to have barrier for season/ticket holders only.

Certainly no use for 'will just cross bridge and buy a ticket'.

south side of the bridge so flow could come and go from both ends,

Until the 1970s rebuild, you could do this. If you look you should be able to see in the walls where the footbridge entrance was.

I can't understand why re-instating this entrance (barrier controlled) isn't part of the massive rebuilding that is about to start. It is in effect about to be knocked down and started again - although the victorian building parts will be retained.

Saw the new Kings Cross departures area last night. Mightily impressive.

I only went through Haymarket this morning to investigate. It served no purpose but to lengthen my route and heighten my blood pressure.

A footbridge linking Dalry Road (above the tracks) across to where the new bike racks are would be really useful. Wouldn't help with the crowds inside the station of course.

I didn't have any problems at Haymarket coming from the west, turned up Magdala Crescent, along Eglinton Cresent, turn right onto Palmerston Place, then back onto Torphicen St.
Looks like it is just the reverse of that to go west, easy peasy.

"I assume knocking the thing down and starting again (or building some more space on the front) isn't an option"

Been an option many times - including replacement with a many storey office block.

    It's the balance betweeen history/heritage/place and 'modern'/clean/practical.

There are plans for E-G which will mean improvements, but I think key bits of Edinburgh's first 'main line station/terminus' will remain.

    This is Edinburgh.

How long for Waverley escalators + Haymarket lifts??

    easy peasy.

Unless your approach from the east is via Morrison Street. I can't figure out how I can get west from Morrison Street without going up Dalry.

"A footbridge linking Dalry Road ..."

So would the one 'in the plans' for many years, from around Duff Street to Devon Place.

    Too expensive...

.. we have to go and complain to the Victorians about Haymarket station..

Well, up to a point. But... there are two doors, only one is used much. They could be "In" and "Out" with suitable feed in rails to the barriers which are "In" and "Out" most mornings.

And why do all the season ticket users go through the manned barriers? Maybe because the auto barriers don't work with season tickets, which could be fixed.

@chdot - no This was Today

    Will be tomorrow
As you can see I am aiming for Stockbridge so a more northerly route suits better

Kaputnik, via Baldcyclist, the trick is that Torphichen Place is being made two-way, so you go down Morrison St and then turn right at Diane's Pool Hall.
