    Wow, thanks for all the extra info guys!

    I'm afraid I didn't get through the gym quickly enough to go out to the barge before work today - on the upside, I managed unassisted pull-ups for the first time ever, so I'm pretty happy. I'll make the next one, it would be great to meet people!

    I have already gone between two buses, and have decided it is something I am going to avoid in the future. I didn't get hurt or anything but it was a bit scary.

    Definitely going to look into some of the organized rides, thanks!

    The helmet mirror looks wonderfully dorky. I think I may need one. Definitely have to sort out my lights and panniers or a basket. Other than that my budget for this is shot for the moment (after bike, lock, helmet and jacket).

    @Darkerside - I was pedalling around the meadows singing "Summertime" to myself yesterday afternoon, it was lovely. :D

    If you want to venture further afield, try planning your route with http://www.cyclestreets.net/
    It's a cycle-specific journey planner and it's pretty helpful. It shows you which roads are likely to be quiet, which busy with traffic, where the offroad cycle paths are, etc.

    I don't know if you have ever done any group rides before, it certainly is different and requires you to be vigilant about those in front and around you, but they are a great way to get to know people who are like minded. I would be delighted if you would consider coming on a CTC Short Sunday Ride, these take place every 3rd Sunday of the month, meet for about 0945 at the Commonwealth Pool to set off for 1000, are of about two hours duration, in which time we should cover 15 - 20 miles, in and around Edinburgh, with some history thrown in. We have a coffee stop at the end for a catch up, blether and cake. It really is dependent on your level of fitness but the CTC do offer other rides, longer distances and at a faster pace but not road club level. Check out the CTC website at http://www.ctclothians.org.uk/ for local rides. I lead the Short Sunday rides. I will also be taking the Ladies Bike Ride on midsummer's day, that is Thursday 21st June starting at 1700 also from the Commonwealth Pool.

    Apologies for the blatant plug to the administrator...

    This diagram might help when you need to visit one Edinburgh's many helpful bike shops. It can be difficult getting used to the local names for bike parts. I've spent many a happy hour going from shop to shop in my quest for a long wait, a sky hook or a left-handed spanner.

    Exploded view of bike with parts named

    @tom

    Is April fools day big in the cycling mollie household? I have been squirted by fake chewing gum trick from the beano already this morning but did get my own back when told my son his trip to war hammer shop cancelled as his pal was I'll.

    I would actually like a diagram with the real names, I can never remember them
