All this innocent waving, what about use Roseburners?

Cyclists generally do seem a lot more serious. I spend a lot more time up the hills than cycling and everyone, without fail says hello. It's not unusual for people to stop for a blether and maybe even share a tea and pork pie!

Maybe it's just the fast, lonely nature of a bike compared with walking.

I put it down to being out the city, i always found mountain biking at Glentress (before it was converted to a play park) the people would always say hello and generally if you were at a point where people would naturally stop, top of a hill car park etc, then they would have a chat. Its even better [than the town] up in Balerno or Currie when i'm out for a longer ride if I come across some one out that way at the weekend I'll always nod or say hello depending on the gradient especially if I'm slugging up a hill or passing someone while I'm wheeling back down and in that situation I'll almost always get a response.

In the town I'll generally nod or smile how ever the odds of a response are as noted 50/50. Maybe its because I'm nominally a roady and people have an instinctive dislike for them. I'm more hopeful that its more about not seeing people very often when one is out of the town.

"or they are just miserable B's!"

    Moi?

    Sometimes...

"In the town I'll generally nod or smile"

    Well this is my problem.

Because I 'know' so many people who ride bikes, can never be sure if I'm supposed to remember who nodder is. This works both ways - there are one or two people I know (let's say "life long cyclists") who react to my nod automatically as though I was just another 'fellow of the road' rather than someone they actually know!

I think it's undoubtedly the case that many people on bikes just drift off into their own world (in a good way). "In the town" they are more concerned with potholes/cars than the motivation of other people on bikes 'trying to attract their attention'.

Keep smiling/waving it will benefit you and there will be a ripple effect.

"T-shirt has legs. We could all arrive at Cockburn St shop at same time and get the design and our names added "

@ Gembo Hmmm sounds like a nightmare finding a time everyone can meet up and sort of the point of t shirts is so you can easily spot other CCE posters, if we've already met they're less necessary? Instead, why not pick a suitably distinctive colour (I dunno, egshell blue or mint green or dutch orange or something) and someone arty on the forum here provides the shop with a suitable CCE design.
That way we can go into the shop when we can find time and ask for the CCE design on the same coloured t-shirt? Maybe....?

It still works for meeting at the pub as well ;-)

edited to add, just noticed there are t-shirt designs advertised in citycycling issue 57, so an even simpler identifier would be to pick a certain design and colour then all we have to do is get our pseudonyms added to a sleeve or whatever, simples!

Did a grin test on the path this morning, only one person smiled back, and they were all riding with the wind I was struggling against.

Why so angry looking I wonder? It's really good fun cycling downhill with the wind behind you.

You Roseburners must just be positively standoffish then. ;-) I had 100% smile rate yesterday with only one grumpy looking guy this morning and he may have just been struggling in thw wind.

Perhaps it is to do with the width of the path? The Innocent is quite a lot narrower than the Roseburn so you can really see the whites of people's eyes.

Either that or they are stressed that it is all going to be ripped up one day to make way for trams.

Maybe people heading downhill on the Innocent are just happy because they know they have the excitement of Bingham to come. What will it be today? A burning motorbike? More furniture in the burn? (The leather sofa appears to have been replaced with a chair). A barrier of sticks and broken glass?
