No mention of schemes having been started in Dunbartonshire in 2005, Renfrewshire in 2007 and Fife in 2010. Lothian and Borders Police have been asked to support this earlier but said no.

  3. Loving the comments.

Apparently the Lib Dems are the policitcal arm of Spokes (can they do something about Nick Clegg then please?).

And Edinburgh is getting more like the former East Germany every day (the communist slant on Godwin's law). He's right though, L&B Police are just like the Stasi...

  4. Hehehehehehehe!

"OMG!! What idiots thought of this idea? There are laws in place and no need of people who can;t get a real job to join the council. Hang on....that's half the council staff already! What research has been done to prove that speeding is the issue in the accidents and not the driver's inattention or road design or pedestrian fault? Oh know........speeds easier to measure. No wonder road rage is on teh increase."

  5. Genius! These are genuinely funny, rather than ire-inducing today:

"welcome to Comrade Mackenzie's snooper state. The parallel with the former East German STASI is valid, because they relied on huge numbers of informers, often to report on their own families. Far from creating an inclusive "we all need to work together" society (as Snidewhiner vacuously hopes for in post 9), the policy was extremely divisive, because people could not trust one another. Policing should be performed by the professionally trained, not busybodies pushing agendas that the majority has not voted for"

But this is a seriously fantastic gift for us, we can really mnake the cagers wince & squeal !

Whinge, whine, threaten, abuse, it's all a conspiracy, it's soooo unfair! etc etc... the usual frothing vacuous non-sense from the usual EEN trolls and glove puppets.
If people don't speed they don't need to worry who is measuring their speed do they?

But Hark! What's that sound I can hear in the background?
I know... it's the worlds smallest violin... ;-))

Flippancy aside, I don't want to see any particular group "wince and squeal", after all, a great many of us are "cagers" sometimes. I am however more than happy, indeed keen to see the existing laws enforced with enthusiasm.

  8. Ah but that is playing into the hands of the commenters. Quite simply it's a deterrent. I'm not bothered about wincing and squealing, just about people driving a bit more slowly and, therefore, more safely.

It's just funny the adverse reaction any story about making people actually drive at the legal speed limit garners...

  9. Argh! Beaten to it by Smudge!

The term 'cager' was used a lot on ACF and YACF when I posted - never did like it to be honest.

Use of vigilante rather than volunteer is somewhat provocative...

    Quick on the draw ;-)
"cages" I don't mind, "cager" is a little more pejorative I suppose.

Thanks for the reminder to tweet L&B to ask for the 40 cameras at Newbridge to be moved to cover the whole limit though, was through there obeying the limit this am and it was scary having half asleep people zap past me 30mph faster than they are allowed to :-(

"“Providing information or leads for the police is OK, but you have to take care that people are not pursuing their own agendas and certain people don’t suddenly get a lot of tickets."

I love this comment from the normally sensible IAM. They'll only get a lot of tickets if they keep speeding. They are not even getting "tickets" anyway, just a warning letter.

"Cager" - how odd. Remember, these are people like you and me that you are talking about. I can't say that I have ever seen an instance where insulting someone helps bring them round to your point of view.

@Min, yes it does seem a little odd, I do wonder if a reporter has phoned them up, given "edited highlights" of the story and asked for a quote/reaction.

So, the usual, "get off the f***ing road, you b****y cyclist" is okay, but "cager" is not?
    Cage rage, therefore, cager.

I think it is quite apt in describing 'frustrated' motorists.

    "Cager"

I'm occasionally taken to use this phrase though in my mind it is a pejorative term for a specific type of motor vehicle user, generally the punishment pass type. Your average run of the mill POC (person in car) doesn't really warrant any particular name, they are after just people in a car.

I dunno wot gives here, I see nothing wrong with the term Cagers. I do NOT use a car, I will NOT use a car, I do NOT comprimise or collude with the car centric society, obviously some of you do.
I hope this becomes law, I cannot wait to get a yellow jckt and speed gun.
We can use this weapon to take forward cycling, I for one won't look any gift horse in the mouth.
I thought this was cycling forum, not a "I cycle when I'm not driving" forum !!!!

"via the direct Queensferry Road route"

Does that including the bit where cycling is banned?

Not asking you to incriminate yourself! - just that the 'deviation' is definately slower.

I've plenty of words to describe people who pass too close etc. - all far to colourful for this forum. Some even escape into the wild when things get particularly hairy on the road. However, I think labeling all motorists as "cagers" is counterproductive. In addition, I think the term itself is too dull to act as a real insult - unlike ******* ******* ***** ******. That leaves them in no doubt on my view of their driving!

    "Weapon?"

A radar speed gun is, despite its name, a defensive tool.

"I thought this was cycling forum, not a "I cycle when I'm not driving" forum !!!!"

It's a forum or people who cycle - and a few who want to cycle (more/to work etc.) and are taking early steps to do so - which 'we' encourage.

It's not 'for' people whose only form of transport is a bicycle or for 'roadies' or for 'full-on helmet/hi viz commuters' or for weekend pootlers or for fair weather cyclists or for extreme (most people's terms) distance riders.

All those people are here - and many other 'flavours', sub divisions, sects and combines of the above.

Some own cars. Most probably use them a lot less than 'average' and by cycling are (probably) helping things to be better/safer for everyone else.

    "

Bit of a leap to suggest that if you don't like the term 'cager' that you think it's okay for people to yell abuse at cyclists no?

"I do NOT comprimise or collude with the car centric society, obviously some of you do"

From the Stasi to Vichy France?

"I thought this was cycling forum, not a "I cycle when I'm not driving" forum !!!!"

I'd say more a forum of people who cycle.

Och. I thought this was a silly banter forum.

Explains why there are so many cycling weirdos hanging around.
