An election

Rumour has that there is one coming next month.

Of course Members won't need reminding that blatant partisan electioneering will look out of place here. (Another thread is currently discussing Dr. Who, so most things are acceptable!!...)

It will be interesting to see how the parties and candidates handle the issues that are interesting to "us" - getting more people cycling, strange bicycles, odd road signs etc.

I presume Spokes will be producing an "Election Special" covering local candidates' views on cycling.

I suspect that there is only one who has been captured by Google Street View.

As seen on Google Street View.

It is now 'Official' there is going to be election and here is a list of things I suggest we should be asking for, if any of the candidates should happen to ask.

Sounded out Labour candidate in South recently. Having received some very generic and negative campaign material from him, I asked what issue he thought was important for Edinburgh South and he failed to say much specific and nothing at all about transport or the environment. I also note that he is quoted in that EEN story about kids (gasp) having to walk to school saying "You can't ask kids to walk to a school that is 2.9 miles away."

I missed a glorious opportunity to ask Alec Salmond what his line is on cycling today. He came into the restaurant I was eating in (Jolly's on Elm Row - lovely minestrone soup btw) and shook the hands of several fellow diners. Not me though. He can probably tell I'm a Labour man by my red cycling jacket.

My mis-read sorry, given I wouldn't know most of the "representatives" if they bothered to come to my area... spill the beans, who is it then? :-)

In response to chdot's first message - there won't be a Spokes election special - but there's a short article in our latest issue of Spokesworker [21.3.10].

Amongst other things it tells you all the local candidates we know of who are or have been spokes members.

Also in the diary section of that Spokesworker, see the WWF election question times on April 22 and 28 - why not go along and ask some transport questions?

While you're at it, have a look at the Open Space Consultation article and consider making a response to the council if you like any of their ideas, or if you think they've missed anything.

I've decided I'm not voting for anyone who goes on about making things better for families. What about single people?

"I've decided I'm not voting for anyone who goes on about making things better for families. What about single people?"

That's the problem with politicians - they are 'focus group focussed' - and try to get 'identifiable' groups to vote for them.

This is why they (generally) try to be 'friends of motorists'.

They'd be better off trying to be 'friends of non-motorists' - there are more of them AND 'motorists' aren't even motorists most of the time!

Haven't seen a single candidate or canvasser, I get the feeling they aren't interested in my vote.

"Haven't seen a single candidate or canvasser, I get the feeling they aren't interested in my vote."

You're obviously not in a 'marginal' seat - I think there are 2-3 in Edinburgh depending on which propaganda you believe - also whether they are 2 or 3 candidate marginals.

I predict LibDem gain in Ed South and Lab hold in Ed East (just)

I'm in Airdrie. It's been Labour since '45. Indeed it was the same person held it from then until John Smith. I don't expect to see anybody out on the street.

At least we're not as fat as Coatbridge.

Aye, Sheila Gilmore evidently feels safe, but you'd think that Beverley Hope and George Kerevan would make more of an effort.

"you'd think that Beverley Hope and George Kerevan would make more of an effort"

I imagine they will - but such a three way split will favour the 'resident' party (even with a new candidate).

"Well I got the first bit wrong!!"

I think we all did. A bit of a surprise there. Good to hear that Mark L held Edin. North though.

The guy who ran against Mark L last time, Mike Crockart, has won Ed West for the Lib Dems (no surprise). I know him through totally non-political connections, and he's a nice guy, but have no idea what his position is on cycling related things.

As told to the CTC for it's Vote Bike initiative.

(Only one of Edinburgh's winning candidates bothered to sign up.)

"Mr" "Mark" "Lazarowicz" "Edinburgh North and Leith" "Labour" "Y" """I support all these points. Indeed, I think we should be seeking to be even more ambitious - other countries can do it! I have been a keen supporter of the All-Party cycling group here in Parliament, and have also been a member of Spokes, the Lothian cycle campaign, for 25 years or so (the only MP to be a member, I think).

I also promoted these types of policies in Edinburgh when a member of the City Council.

I regularly cycle in Edinburgh at home, and also regularly cycle to and from the House of Commons when in Westminster."""

As she didn't come round knocking on doors, it is hard to say. Come to think of it all the candidates were very quiet in Edinburgh East, the only one I saw was Robin Harper at the Farmers Market.

Ah okay. Nicely highlighting the awkwardness of that junction arrangement!

(my posts are not wrapping properly again?

Just went in and pressed return so it can be read.)
