I am not liking the way this thread is drifting .. digestive biscuits ... tea... ?? Toast or nothing!

CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

You might be on the wrong board if these feelings happen often...
I will have to dispute this: toast (brown) and crunchy peanut butter is a fine thing, but the double whammy of sugar and stickiness on a McVities digestive dipped really quickly into a mug of strong milky tea is superior.
(thank you - I appreciate that you are willing to overlook this character flaw)
I suspect that we have some kingfisher lurkers on CCE that are having a laugh: since I announced that I was aiming to try to capture a decent picture of a kingfisher this autumn I have seen none.
At 0740ish this morning a deer on the towpath just west of the Slateford Aqueduct. When I say 'on' the towpath, I mean on the towpath, not 'seen from the towpath'. The bike in front of me had to stop to avoid it.
Did anyone saw any Waxwings arriving in the city yet? Determined to photograph some!
The second fox exiting the garden of a house on Baird Avenue this morning was pretty exciting! I wasn't expecting it to follow its pal who'd run out around 3 seconds earlier and scarpered up the road and sharply left into Baird Terrace.
Fox 2 came soaring over the front gate like a champion showjumper, landed 3 feet ahead of my front wheel and proceeded to do a Scooby Doo-style getaway, with all 4 legs pumping away but his paws finding almost no purchase on the road surface for the longest fractions of a second. Luckily I'd grabbed big handfuls of brake as soon as I'd caught the shape of something flying in my direction in the corner of my eye, and he finally got going with great haste, disappearing round the same corner as his friend.
@threefromleith wow! No audible signs of pursuit? I once spotted a fox frantically trying to jump over the wall on Craighouse Road, opposite Craighouse Gardens, to escape from an approaching vehicle (and possibly me). That wall is quite tall though and after a few failed attempts the fox changed its strategy, running along the pavement and around the end of the wall into Craighouse Woods instead.
@Greenroofer at the weekend I met someone who is recovering from a broken collar bone having collided with a stag... (I don't know the details and in particular if this was on or off road).
I apparently shamed the lurker kingfishers enough that one of them graced me with its presence on the way home tonight. Having heard a kingfishery chirp just round the corner from the Bridge 8 Hub, I was then overtaken by a kingfisher which proceeded to alight on a branch before repeatedly diving in and out of the water. Lovely.
A fairly decent photo from my old compact 12x zoom camera; now I want to capture a higher megapixel version with my far bulkier DSLR...
@jdanielp No, there didn't seem to be any obvious signs of anything pursuing them. No dogs barking, no human yelling "Gerrootaemabins!"
But something must have made them scarper at such a rate. Maybe something as simple as someone opening a door & spooking them.
@jdanielp: oh, nice!
Well done on the pic.
I can't work out whether it confirms or debunks the notion of kingfisher lurkers on here.
@unhurt @Trixie thanks :)
A dead badger by the side of Linburn road near kirknewton
I nearly ran over the Kingsknowe Rat as it ran out in front of me on the towpath this evening.
Well, I assume it was the Kingsknowe Rat, I was actually up by the Calder Road...
Watching a red admiral dance
Across the school shirts on the line
Hoping the clouds will pass
Without rain drops this time
Saw a kingfisher at the bridge to the art gallery on the Water of Leith this afternoon.
more hares than you can shake a stick at on the road just before Middleton Lime quarry. Was the same last time i pedaled that way.
Do hares like lime ?
No they love you and wait for you at that quarry
We see a kingfisher quite often at Warriston, opposite the end of Logie Green Road. It was there this morning, along with a young goosander and moorhen. Shortly after watching it the birdsong stopped briefly as a sparrowhawk swooped across from the allotments and cemetery.
There are already large numbers of geese at Aberlady Bay, as well as lots of Shelduck, Lapwings and a few Little Egrets at the moment.
My highlight today though, was watching a female Sparrowhawk down a Collared Dove outside my front door. I watched as the dove was plucked and devoured with remarkable efficiency. Sparrowhawks seem to be doing very well in the Edinburgh area so I hope to enjoy this experience again.
Cheers
Colin
Edinburgh sparrowhawks breed more successfully compared to. Ayrshire ones. Have they moved on from sparrows?
It is a jungle out there

Highlight last week was watching a woodpecker pecking at a tree up on Winton Hill.
Massive brown mouse skittering in continently on edge of towpath beyond aqueduct. Mor little micekins on the way
Followed a fox down a cycle path alongside the Potomac river last night.
This morning there was what looked like a large white heron in the river at the same spot. Quick onine search suggests it could have been a whooping crane or a snowy egret. Whooping cranes are very rare and this isn't their normal territory, but snowy egrets aren't as big as I remember the bird I saw being.
Edit: Looks like there's a breeding program for whooping cranes in Maryland, so it could have been a crane. I'd actually heard of the program before, it's famous for having humans dress up as cranes to raise the chicks.
Knew I should have taken photos.
Geese, honking along over Leith Links, heading southish.
Loads of little egrets stalking around Stanpit Marsh. Also some lovely horses.
