A great tit just went into the pocket of my jeans on the washing line. Looking for a nest hole maybe. Can spring be far away?

A not too fussy Great Tit?

    Ok, I will bite

Yes, spring must be just around the corner, the climing clematis is budding, the rhubarb pushing through the dark earth, the coal tits collecting for their nests and the season of rebirth just ahead

The only wildflowers I saw when I was out yesterday were Winter Aconite, Snowdrops and Winter heliotrope. So at least in E Lothian, I think it is still winter.

Photographer friend took this kingfisher on a recent weekend spent hiding in a hide. (If she uploads the sparrowhawk having lunch I'll link to that too.)

@unhurt nice! I spotted a stoat scuttling amongst the reeds on the far bank of the canal at Hermiston House, a heron shortly thereafter, despite the ice, a bellowing (apparently) of bullfinches in a bush by the towpath and a very fine looking black cat on the far bank in Wester Hailes.

The colony of 5000 bees was found producing honey in a wall cavity in the library at Heriot-Watt University’s Riccarton Campus.

@chdot at least some 'workers' at Heriot-Watt are being treated as well as could be expected by management.

On the way out to the office around lunch time today, somewhere around WesterHailes, I spotted a small bird of prey possibly a Kestral catch a pigeon, and then land on the frozen canal. A real highlight.

Lovely big thrush looking for food outside the window. Maybe mistle?

    @chrisfl

You have been blessed. Sparrowhawk almost certainly. Very rare to witness a kill.

Lot of the birdies are big just now, puffed up to help keep out the cold?

Many noisy redwings blown in by the Eastern Beast. Fractious from hunger I suspect.

IWRATS - thanks, looking at some photos, I agree sparrowhawk does seem likely.

Birds are so hungry this AM I've just watched a male blackbird working to hang off the fatball feeder.

I do like a long-tailed tit. Cutest silhouette in the bird world.

Some of those along the river earlier. Also a handsome bullfinch, a dipper, and some wannabe suitors pursuing a female goosander downstream.

@gembo it was a songthrush, she was back this morning in better light.

@iwrats, spotted long tailed tit down in Ham south west London Tuesday mornng. Ultra cute.

@unhurt, yes the throstle seems more abundant than the mistle.?

It looks like the Wester Hailes swans are starting to think about nesting. I spotted them mooching around the usual site at the Wester Hailes Lagoon alongside the canal.
