A fairly cute looking rodent (either a very small rat or a relatively large mouse/vole) swimming across the canal at Polwarth last night. The swan family on the grass by the towpath near Boroughmuir High School Plaza this morning.

Water voles are significantly cuter than rats. How many long tails did it have?
Posted 6 years ago # -
@jdanielp (if you saw the tail it was not a Water Vole) Wingpig is trying to trick you
Posted 6 years ago # -
@wingpig @gembo I don't remember spotting any tail(s?) as such. It looked different to The Kingsknowe Rat when I saw it swimming the other day. I'm going to say it was a vole.

Rat o'nine tails.

A cuckoo calling and calling on Dunnet Head, acres of glorious yellow gorse / broom flowers, swallows galore; a whole colony of nesting sandwich terns almost right outside the hide at St John's Pool near Dunnet and two handsome male shoveler at the same spot bobbing their heads at each other.
Also an orca spotted from the Gills Bay ferry, but not by me and it was gone before I could spot it.
No midges! So far...

So jealous unhurt, it hurts
Posted 6 years ago # -
Sorry. Er. I had a lie in this morning in a warm sunny tent listening to surf on Dunnet Beach and a particularly musical and determined skylark right overhead.
Posted 6 years ago # -
@unhurt
You're doing all this so that we don't have to, am I right?
Posted 6 years ago # -
Of course. My sacrifice for the good of CCE. I'm not enjoying it.
Posted 6 years ago # -
If you don't have to chip the ice off your brake discs in the morning it isn't real cycling.

I can't recommend not-spotting orcas. I failed to spot a pod of orcas when visiting the Fair Isle in 2011 despite pretty much everyone else on the island managing to do so. It was all the more frustrating seeing all of the photos.

I've been vaguely wondering why my watering can wasn't pouring properly for the last few days. Today pulled off the rose and a small dead mouse fell out. It must have crawled into the rose and I screwed on the rose without noticing it, unless it had climbed up on the rubbish bins and managed to high dive into the watering can.
A stomach-turning sight and smell.

this year i've become quite a big player in the bird feeding game
a veritable magnate of the goldfinch scene
Posted 6 years ago # -
@bax San Enough to make you read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt? Too late for you to go and see the painting of the same name when it came to national gallery?
Veritable cornucopia of bird feed spotted on my latest trip to Aldi.
Posted 6 years ago # -
too many doos arrive with the supermarket feed tho eh
and they get it all wrong with their jealous sentry duty
despite relying on the smaller birds to toss seed from the feeders

Fair point bax Maesstro. Also we get a lot of squirrels eating the bird food. I liked the ones which came inside half a coconut. I actually one a replica half a coconut, made of recycled plastic and twine. It broke.

Anybody wishes to read Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch come and see me in the playground.
Posted 6 years ago # -
@iwrats, I thought you ripped out the 500 pages from your copy that the editors failed to convince Ms Tartt to delete?
Posted 6 years ago # -
@gembo that copy belongs to me own dear mother. I'd sooner tear me own heart out.

There are cygnets on Craiglockhart Pond although I didn't actually spot them last night because they were asleep under their mother's wings, although one was fluffily poking out at one end. I hear that there are six. Also saw bats and heard owls in the woods up above the pond. No badgers evident.

Lots of big deer slots just outside the tent his morning. Assume they were investigating me, but i didn't hear a thing.
Posted 6 years ago # -
@unhurt
The deer will have been seeking safety from the wolves.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Two Canadian geese passing about twenty feet above my head and honking as if a cyclist was taking primary in front of them.
Posted 6 years ago # -
Some very large mushrooms next to the A90 path and a family of hares at the far side of the field.
Posted 6 years ago # -
@acsimpson
Hare goes really well with wild mushrooms. Bon appétit!
Posted 6 years ago # -
Some very tiny ducklings on the canal today.
Posted 6 years ago # -
I can now confirm that there are a total of nine cygnets on Craiglockhart Pond so that's 50% more cuteness than the canal, plus they must be a week or two younger and are therefore that much more fluffy. The canal cygnets are still drawing the crowds though next to Boroughmuir Plaza.

Ducklings also on canal which is what I said to ypu on aqueduct
