Monday morning came across a deer on the coastal path between Dalgety Bay and Dunfermline. We made eye contact for about a second, then it easily vaulted the 1m+ high wall and disappeared into the undergrowth.

The swans on The Loch at Heriot-Watt are now banishing the three young from last year from the water, but are showing no signs of nesting. Estates have been fairly aggresively tidying up vegetation around the campus lately, including on the island that the swans usually nest on, so they will have to completely rebuild when they do get to that point.

A pair of either goosanders or shelducks on the Almond yesterday.

This morning woken by an unnerving thumping in my bedroom. A robin had got trapped in the gap between the two sash windows, the bottom one been opened a few inches. Had to be very careful lowering the window so I wouldn't squash it - it would take off like a helicopter and then drop again as the glass confused it - and grab it. Little warm-blooded creature with fast beating heart and round bright eye. What does it make of this kindly giant rescuing it? I carried it outside and it flew off unhurt.

New career as a launch pad beckons.

Swans on Inverleith Pond have started a nest pile. Two of the four young ones from last year's brood are away, and this afternoon the paired adults were relentlessly pursuing one of the remaining confused young adults round and round the pond, wings up, attitude bad.

Big mustard coloured frog with claret spots around the eyes.

First cutting the grass of the year.

Also not quite wildlife but solo Julian Cope on radio 6 live in Liverpool singing Tiny Children (my favourite song as a yoof). When he gets to the guitar solo ending he just sings it waah-wah-wah

Gannets, larks, hares, ladybirds, knot, shelduck and roe deer at Gullane point.

Sounds like the larder for a Roman feast, no?

The nyger seeds have borne fruit: I have now enticed two gorgeous goldfinches into regular garden visitation.

@jdanielp was probably a parcel of the mallards Urchaidh. (Mallards only take Gaelic cockayne)

I did once see a heron catch a fish at crammond. Hincty.

The heron was involved in a dispute with two seagulls this morning, presumably over canal fishing quotas or something along those lines. Hoping for more heron action tomorrow.

@jdanielp, if the heron is hanging with the herring gulls they will be on the skag.

@gembo let's hope not, but the heron was looking quite chilled out when I saw it on the way home this evening.

I saw a small heron actually on the towpath out west at about 1650 today.

The Slateford Aqueduct Heron was standing in the reeds by the towpath looking unimpressed by the sleet this morning.

No heron action this morning, but it was in its hunting stance just east of the aqueduct.

A Chiffchaff singing its wee heart out, then a fine pair of Bullfinches on my feeder.
And last night, a Sparrowhawk in hunting mode by The Caprice in Musselburgh and two Hares sprinting near Pathead.

    Cheers

Two goldfinches in the garden every day this week. Starting to hope later on I'll get to proudly survey some baby goldfinches.

I spotted @jdanielp's rat near Kingsknowe this evening. It looked very sleek and brown.

@Greenroofer thanks, although I would consider The Kingsknowe Rat to be more yours than mine.

The swans on Craiglockhart Pond are nesting and a great view of the nest is available from Lockharton Crescent. I spotted seven big eggs when the swan that was on the nest briefly stood up to reposition itself whilst preening.

Kingfisher low and bright over dark water from the closed landslide bit of the WoL path. Looking especially radiant in the dreich dull weather.
