@IWRATS, I thought I caught a fleeting glimpse of a swallow last weekend. However it was then hovering and diving to ground level for prey so I'll chalk it up as a kestrel instead.

For a brief moment I could have sworn I heard swifts screaming as I walked through Colinton Mains on Monday. I suspect it was probably starlings, or a starling, especially since I heard a fair impression of a curlew a few seconds later.

Never before the 4th of May. Never. Trust me on this one. Nothing else. Just this.

I'll bump the Swiftwatch™ thread when the time comes.

@iwrats: I didn't honestly think that there were actually swifts about, it was just that on hearing the calls my brain initially registered "swifts" before realising that it couldn't possibly be. As I say, I put it down to starlings (I've seen a small murmuration over Colinton Mains a few times this winter just gone).

Fear not. I have whipped my head skywards in March, fooled by those crazy starlings. They know a birder when they see one.

On our pre-lunch walk to the egg shop to we saw a bat flying about, only the second time I've seen one in the middle of the day.

There is a goldcrest hawking flies in our garden. Could well be a nest somewhere.

Fly is to gold crest as Mouse is to buzzard?

(Size of claw wise not size of bird)

First Swallow of the year for us, near Pathhead, this afternoon. We spent a few moments enjoying its graceful flight as it hoovered up insects in the lee of some trees, with bright sunlight glinting on its back.

IWRATS sounds like a good plan. The A68 is amazingly rideable at the moment too! We saw the Swallow on Salters’ Road which runs parallel to the A68 south of Pathhead. If you’re tempted, beware of the ford on the way to Windymains as,although it’s shallow, it’s notoriously slippy.

@colin is that the Ford with the footbridge next to it and the big sign saying cyclists dismount? One of our peloton is famous for falling off there twice.

gembo - the very one! The tall beech hedge on the west side was being shorn when we went by - seemed a bit ruthless to me.

@colin, I have pal who lives Fala Dam, Told her many stories of the ford. She agreed how tricksy it was. With lockdown appears she also decided to cycle through it. Well. Off she fell.

I think as you say it looks innocuous but it is NOT
