"Star jelly". Bird vomit? Some kind of slime? Too large to have come from a toad. Historically supposed to be the remains of shooting stars.

I have also found that gunk in the woods. Didn't even know what to Google. At a loss.

    That's amazing and mysterious.

Is it true that space dust was banned?

@iwrars, if you google the first two words in @cyclingmollie’s post that will reveal the gunk theories, tho no one has gone with mugwumps were milked nearby. Which is my theory.

@amir, several 70s sweets caused actual bodily harm so original space dust which could burn your mouth if you necked enough was banned. The new stuff is pale initiation bit like the opposite of marijuana. Mint cracknel was a seventies sweet that stopped you in t(e roof of the mouth causing much bleeding. Also banned.

Well that is odd as in I am none the wiser. Wish I'd kept it.

Ok magpie eats frog but leaves the unferilised spawn. Or heron swallows whole frog then months later pukes up the undigested gloop. Lovely

I found the jelly while looking for ceps in a wood at about 250m altitude. So autumn, quite late for frog spawn but very interesting idea.

If the oviducts of frogs contain a dehydrated gelling agent (and I suppose they must) interesting to know why that agent doesn't dehydrate the frog from the inside. Must be kept in an impermeable membrane.

My uncle (my gran’s cousin’s son) worked on a tin dredger in Malaya. Gave me my first drink of whisky, age 5, I spat in the coal fire, gave me a sharp calculator very early days also a magic to open box the bin men crushed by mistake and had a reel to reel tape recorder and some proper Tony Bennett albums that weighed a ton. He gave me a Burl Ives record too so I can sing many of the following - Delaney had a donkey that everyone admired, permanently lazy and permanentLy tired. Saw a flea kick a tree (foo pa woo pa John) and of course

froggy went a courtin and he did ride a-huh

Note one of the above is actually Val Doonican, my parents bought thAt album themselves....

Pair of quite tame red grouse on the summit of Caerketton Hill. Lovely bit of wattle glowing red in the driving rain and mist.

For the second time in three days, I've seen a sparrowhawk make an unsuccessful attack in our garden in Morningside.

Today it sat in a nearby tree after its failed attempt, watching me watching it. It feigned an attitude of 'What you looking at?'

A pal has just sent me video of two otters in the WoL by the bridge below the Gallery of Modern Art this afternoon.

Was halfway up the hill round Arthur's Seat this morning when I remembered about the otter. It seemed to be having a grand time, putting on a show for its wee crowd.

Third buzzard on Lang Whang took off from low post, skimmed the ground, hovered over road, kept going over bog then lifted itself perceptibly onto the deer fence post.

Later my pal,tom seemed to be attacked by a flock of field fare. He said they were bullfinch

Gavin Maxwell, author of Ring of Bright Water, lost a finger to one of his pet otters. Like playing with a capricious circular saw.

Terry Nutkins off the Animal Magic lost parts of two fingers to Gavin Maxwell’s otter Edal.
When Terry somehow became Gavin’s ward and moved from south of England to boondocks Jockland. In those days you just wrote to London Zoo asking them to send you some fellows

None of this stopped our Terry

Interestingly went by a cottage called Glenelg near Tarbrax yesterday

With a name like Nutkins, could he have been anything other than a wildlife presenter? I'd no idea he died in 2012.

Gavin Maxwell and his helpers not only played with otters, they let them share their sleeping bags. They could have lost more than their fingers.

Scottish Government have committed to developing a licencing scheme for driven grouse moors.

Now the scheme will be made of wet toilet paper and the grouse gangsters will drive their shiny 4x4s through it but it's the beginning of the end and we should celebrate that. 2020 has been quite horrible and I choose to see this as a glimmer of hope.

Yes clause 23 - all shooters must wear those funny shirts that are white with green square lines . These are only available in huntin and shooting shops
