Great photos Anth. I must walk round with my eyes closed. Although I did see a sparrowhawk getting mobbed by some crows and a magpie on Royal Terrace on Sunday.

  3. @PS - I tend to be constantly on the lookout for things for my wildlife website. Since starting that I'm convinced I've seen all of these things before, but just not thought about it - there's a startling variety of wildlife in Edinburgh.

Those waxwings must have been right near my flat n'all! Note to self: look up, not down.

@PS - it's like cycling. You look where you want to go and the bike will follow. If you look where Anth is looking, then the waxwings will follow.

But if Anth is always looking up how does he miss the potholes?

Looking up shifts the weight of your head and shoulders back so your front wheel is lifted over the potholes. Not sure how he manages with the rear wheel though.

I remember reading somewhere that looking up has a positive effect on your mood for some reason - cheers you up. Not sure why, but it does seem to work.

Must be all the waxwings you see, I suppose.

He occasionally looks down to check for waxwings in potholes?

Oh that is cool. I always look up whereever I go (folk have remarked on it). I must know more stars, cornicing and gargoyles than anyone else. No Waxwings though..

You'll like St. Mary's Street then.

  12. Possible/Probable Woodcock this morning while standing chatting to Min on the Innocent.

And, and Min will hate this, I sat down at my desk on arrival and looked out of the window to see a swarm of Waxwings. About 400-500, performing a quick murmuration outside my window (Melville Street looking north) before passing over the building heading south.

Torn now on seeing if I can find that flock at lunchtime, or a Water of Leith wander...

That is so not funny! And yes I do hate it! :-P Plus, in case anyone was wondering, I had my back to the possible Woodcock. Pfft.

I did get treated to a Pheasant strutting haughtily across the path then vanishing into a snowdrift on the other side with a little "flomp". If the bird had been wearing a monacle, it would have popped out of his eye in astonishment.

unknown bird singing an unspectacular song in the back green this morning (couldn't see as my shutters are remain firmly bolted shut). However it counts as a highlight as it's the first I've heard singing in what seems like a long time.

  15. View from my office window just now, they'd better hang around (in Drumsheugh Gardens) for the next half hour or so!!!

  16. Right, so more Waxwings at lunch today. Grey Wagtails, Moorhen, Chaffinch and... a Kingfisher. Twice. But I still don't have a photo...

Where was this anth? I took a quick stoat along the WoL from Stockbridge to the colonies, but only saw some ducks battling furiously against the meltwater

  18. East of Belford Bridge. Seen a couple there before. Just the once. Staking it out tomorrow lunchtime again!

  19. The Waxwings were in Drumsheaugh Gardens (the rest down at the WoL).

The shooting of ducks, geese and waders is to be suspended in Scotland for the second time this year because of severe weather.

From one minute past midnight on Friday it will become illegal to shoot ducks including reared mallard, geese, woodcock, snipe and golden plover.

The suspension, approved by the Scottish government, could last for up to two weeks, but will be reviewed after seven days.

A highlight if you're a mallared, goose, woodcock, snipe or golden plover!

Anthony had a fantastic photo in yesterday's EN.

    Meant to post before...

PS Innocent was very icy today in places. A tree is blocking the tunnel end which is just as well as it's icy there!

As is Bruntsfield Links path. I skited my way down from EBC, cursing the fact I'd worn my flat-bottomed cycling shoes rather than my boots.

Did spot a small flock of waxwings stripping the last of the berries from some of the trees though, hardly felt confident enough to stop and look up though, in case I fell!
