Not today, but my first chance to post (I was out all day yesterday!)
Apart from some cute chaffinches sneaking in amongst the sparrows we had a cheeky squirrel helping himself to the peanuts :)
Always fun to watch :)
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

Blackcap at last, hurray! Cute little fluffed up male.
All the usual garden visitors seem to be later than usual this year. I don't keep a record any more so I'm not sure. Perhaps I should?
With that in mind, it is the Big Garden Birdwatch on the 29th and 30th Jan.
Oooh one of those is my birthday!
Is that a hint? :-P
"Is that a hint?"
More like a self reminder...

A heron in the scottish widows pond, the koi better watch out!
Saw my first Brambling yesterday.
Usual lunchtime wander on the Water of Leith had the Kingfisher again plus Goosander, Grey Wagtail, Great Tit...

I saw a flock of lesser spotted, greater shellsuited Gorgie pavement BMXists last night, getting into a swearing match with a white van man who almost knocked them down as they rode across a pedestrian crossing on the red man. It's not often I find myself coming down on the side of the WVM and it was hard to resist advising the wee plooks to purchase a "proper bike", get some lights and get off the pavement.
Just for chdot as I know he likes them, you don't have to be near water, or even outside, to spot Herons... This one landed on the building opposite my office window.
Ta.
Doesn't look too happy there.
No doubt someone below will be reporting the presence of a vulture.
Can be viewed indoors but you will have to get paper copy!
All Those months of stalking that Kingfisher finally paid off! Anth WOL Kingfisher photo is on P11 in today's Evening news.
Entitled 'High Flier'.
Haven't got a picture to hand, but I have seen a heron on the roof of the Scottish Widows building several times, and they are supposed to be shy birds...
Im sure they are after the koi...

Lowlight indeed. I did some voluntary work for the RPSB in Abernethy monitoring capercaillie nest predation about 6 years ago. Their future looked slightly more optimistic back then.

"German Police Pick up Drunken Owl."
Reminds me of the words to the 1980's Smiths song:
"I was standing in the gaze of a drunken owl but heavens knows I'm miserable now".............or something like that
We cycled the Rigg Race route out of Balerno today, road rutted, wet. muddy and indeed still icy in places [I wish I hadn't bothered cleaning the bike first]. Anyway we then went to the bird hide near Thriepmuir Resevoir. It looks out onto a flooded water meadow. In the winter the considerate volunteers also leave feed out on a tree next to the hide, so from the same place today in the space of a few minutes we saw Mallard, Pochard, Widgeon, Teal, Goose (possibly pink footed], Goldeneye, Gosander on the loch and in the tree - bunting, tree creeper, brambling, chaffinch, coal tit, blue tit and long tailed tit. We also think we heard water rail. Cycle back down to Balerno may only have taken 10 mins. Happy in the haze of a drunken hour.
Hope you're not miserable now, Gembo.
Thinking of heading out to Pencaitland tomorrow, scout out some of the Audax route. Then back along the old railway track, up to Penicuik from Whitecraig. Maybe some wildlife will come out to play for me also.
Heaven knows I'm not miserable now. I have been out to Pencaitland but mostly Sustrans. The old railway behind the distillery etc. Have been on the cycle track from Whitecraigs to Dalkieth and then the other cycle track from Dalkieth to P'cuick. All old railway. Have Joe Da HouseGuest with me for this term and we were at bird hide
yesterday and Canal Towpath to Tesco today - I know how to treat da houseguests. HE pointed out I spent more time cleaning the bikes than riding them. Finish Line degreaser that comes in the tin, Ka-Boom refill, EBC chain cleaner gizmo, Park Tool wee brush, EBC frame all much in action, Secteur and Tricross all little in action.
Was a small amount of ice at the Penicuik end of the old railway line but it soon gave way to mud and filth until you reach the tarmacced section at Rosewell.
I didn't stop to take a photo as I was on the main road, but was much amused by Midlothian Cooncil's piling all the snow from Penicuik into a gap site on the high street, there's still a remnant glacier about 8 feet thick.
Only if you were on a bike...
