Arctic warbler sighted in East Lothian two weeks ago. Trees must have seemed gigantic to this tundra dweller.

The geese are on the move too, pink leg coming in from Iceland, other brands on way out?

Saw a seal swimming on the surface at Musselburgh while waiting for the chimneys to come down!

A bird of prey (assume buzzard) being mobbed by a couple of crows above the canal towpath.

I went up Corstorphine Tower yesterday for the first time (Doors Open Day). Superb views even with the slightly hazy conditions so highly recommended.

Wildlife spot of two buzzards circling upwards on a thermal made the view even better.

Bats flitting about, silhouetted against the sky and canal surface, for the entirety of my ride home from work today.

Fairly certain I was hit by a bat on Monday night in the gloaming on the WoL Path

Saw an otter in Redbraes park.
It run at me then stopped, ran out the park onto Broughton road then hid under a car.
It then ran back into the park in the direction of the water of leith.
Never saw one enjoying our parks before.
    Pretty cool.

  10. That is BRILLIANT!

(and certainly beats the Treecreeper I saw at lunchtime that I was going to post about)

Beautiful evening at Aberlady made even more special by the arrival of the pink footed geese. It's the first time I've seen them and it was a spectacular sight and sound. Tempted to head back out there again tomorrow.

It was an East Lothian day for us today. After recommendations here we visited Saltoun Woods and walked some of the Yester path. Really enjoyed both.

We watched a squadron trying to get into formation above path to carlops, though these ones might have been heading out the way. The v formation is similar to chain gang in cycling

Bats, I think, on the NEPN last night.
Also a rodent with a long tail. Might have been a rat, it was quite big, but I am not sure if it was big enough to be a rat.

Rats are quite small when they are babies. :-)

I saw a crow landing on the Morningside Maisie the other day just as it was about to move off from the bus stop. It tried to maintain dignity for a bit before giving up and flying off. I thought they were meant to be clever!

MAJOR project to expand the Scottish Seabird Centre is in line for a £3.5 million boost.

Ambitious plans to relaunch the popular North Berwick attraction as the National Marine Centre have been backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The new complex will build on the success of the five-star centre with additional education and visitor facilities, including a series of
underwater cameras.

Some sort of large-looking (bigger than I think kestrels are) attack-bird keeping pace with me off to my right somewhere between Whitecraigs and Musselburgh, on my way back from Vulcan-spotting.

Lots of deadgehogs on the Wisp and a possible badger on the A6106.

Belated Canadian wildlife - an unhappy marmot (stunned by a car, I think, I had to nudge it off the road as it was going round in circles):

Bear wandering casually across the back of a motel parking lot in White River, Ontario:

She/he was a wee bit of a delinquent bear. Tried to break into the cafe the night before - while they were open! White spot on bum is a paintball splat from someone chasing it off. Lady at the gas station over the road from the cafe had a photo on her phone of it standing on the roof of a car outside the cafe a few mornings before. Not a beast with a long future, sadly.

Also in Ontario (they seem to have cornered the market in trees and bears) - this is much more like the distance at which I prefer to meet bears! It was a VERY quiet backroad, so I'm glad it was well up ahead.

I cheerily greeted a group of five young swans on the canal as I passed by WHEC this morning (they appear to have been abandoned by their parents - last week this group was six, but I'm not sure if they are from the original group of six or eight cygnets). I heard odd noises from behind me shortly aftewards and turned to see them flying past in a slightly messy formation. One didn't have quite enough height to clear the pedestrian footbridge and landed on the canal again while the other four flew away into the distance; I hope that they come back or that it goes for it by itself because it was sounding sad after it landed.

    Think so -

    "

The species looks similar to the yellow wagtail but has the yellow on its underside restricted to the throat and vent.

Another Sunday afternoon at Aberlady. This time we walked up the west side of the bay to the end of the golf course.

Pink-footed geese again, also a lapwing (is that worth mentioning? I liked it, but don't know if they are everywhere).

Main reason for the post is the two mammals swimming in the bay. They were a distance away from us and our binoculars aren't great, so at first we assumed they were seals. But after watching them for about 30 minutes we started to doubt that: they were long and thin and something about the way they moved in the water suggested otters. Would that be possible there or am I being an idiot? I'm a bit of a novice at the spotting game.

Think seals are more likely (and still very nice to see) but otters would have been cool.
