@stickman Aberlady is great. There are large flocks of lapwings at this time of year plus other waders, ducks, egrets, herons etc to look for. Seals hang out eg near the mouth. You might also see toe deer or stoats in the reserve.

We went this afternoon. Didn't see many geese but the light was fantastic. There were a couple of deer by the bridge

Cheers, they were around the mouth so probably seals. Still cool though!

Starting to slowly get better at identifying birds. Saw three egrets last year from the bridge and managed to point them out to someone else who had never seen one before, despite visiting the reserve for years!

The geese didn't arrive until the sun had set and most came from the north. Not as many as were there the other week.

Aberlady is becoming one of favourite places.

Pink-footed geese at Aberlady. Well worth a visit if you can stay until after 5pm.

Badger scurrying under gate at back of Astley Ainslie.. Had followed it along the road for short distance, so knew it wasn't a big cat, which was my first thought.

The 54-year-old, who appeared at court on Friday, was also given an Asbo preventing him from entering land with a dog or with others who have a dog in East Lothian and Midlothian for 18 months.

so that's 2 dogs, 1 bear, 2 women and how many blokes?

While we women are heavily outnumbered by pigeon statues in Edinburgh an entire bear seems almost legit?

    "How many blokes?"

Well there's those 5 Anthony Gormleys, for starters. Then there's one on George St and another (of some really obscure bloke) on Princes St. Is there one of Sir Walter on his monument?

Is there still a stone lion sculpture thing somewhere in Holyrood Park? I'm sure there's a sculpted fish somewhere around Commercial Quay, too.

Haven't had a good thread drift for ages.

(Well apart from ones involving gembo and wfb...)

Is there still a half-submerged swan near St Bernard's Well?

...a statue or just a really waterlogged one?

On topic: my first Edinburgh kingfisher yesterday! From the WoL pathway just before Pizza Express in Stockbridge.

I watched the swan sculpture being installed on the WoL at st Bernard's well. My commute used to go down there. It was very nice. It became clogged with debris and someone used to go along with a big pole to clear it but I imagine as with the submerged gormleys, a big log came along and battered it. This means the 50 odd little towers of rocks that have been installed on the WoL at Dean village have maybe a few weeks of life left before they return to there original state of being I.e. River rocks.

A nuthatch just turned up on the feeder. Never seen one in Edinburgh before.

Good one. The nearest to Edinburgh that I've seen one was Romanno Bridge. Do you have peanuts or seed?

RSPB 'low mess' seed mix. (The great tits clearly can't read.)

There are some birds that throw seed all over the place. That's the only way the pigeons get fed.

There's a dismantled wood pigeon under the bird feeder at the moment. Time share cat didn't ask for food yesterday.

Oh Nuthatches are adorable. That is good news. I had a Tree Sparrow on the feeder last week.

If it weren't for the wee birds scattering seeds off the bird table in my parents' front garden the pheasant which occasionally wanders through probably wouldn't occasionally wander through.

Cool. That's one bird I simply would not recognise. Took me ages to note that stock doves are a common part of wood pigeon flocks.

Great to hear of nuthatches and tree sparrows on feeders. Funnily enough I saw a nuthatch myself on Sunday, in Dreghorn Woods just next to where the Braid Burn flows under Redford Road.
My other spot this week was riding home on Monday along the Clubbiedean track, I had a badger trotting along in front of me for a little while. It certainly sweetened the pill of the first ride home in the dark of the year.
