That is cute. And don't forget it is the Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. I am excited so will probably go and do it straight away. Traditionally the birds stay away in droves. :-)

Had a goldfinch the other day. Lovely colour to contrast against the backdrop of the fenced (tram) area behind the Bankhead Ind Est.

    Not for the weak-of-stomach:
Thursday I arrived at SAC at the Kings Buildings and interrupted a sparrowhawk working its way through a pigeon it had brought down right in amongst the sheffield racks. It had been working on it for about an hour according to my lecturer - lots of feathers to get through.

Eww. Would have kept it happy for a while though! Goldfinches are gorgeous aren't they? I saw mine this morning but not during the official birdwatch! However my count wasn't too bad this year so the usual complete exodus of all winged lifeforms from the garden didn't happen.

Treecreeper outside Peter's Yard this morning. It took me some time to attract anyone's attention to it as my voice had gone so high pitched only bats could hear me.

Talking of bats I had a batty companion up the Innocent on Wednesday evening for a little while. Got quite a fright when my front light suddenly illuminated a bat bottom three feet in front of me. Don't suppose the bat was thrilled either.

You should have got everyone to point their various darkness busters...

  9. Got ONE useable photo which I need to sort in Photoshop. Thus is a picture of it from the screen on the back of the camera using my phone.

Currently in a bar in Glasgow watching it fill up from kicking out time from the Strictly Come Dancing show. Which is an entirely different wildlife...

Mental image of anth, in a bar, in glasgow, surrounded by hen nights, getting quietly riled because they are disturbing him tweeting and admiring his treecreeper on the camera

A nice wee mouse popped out in front of me and scooped along the wall beside McKelvie Parade last night. Haven't seen a mouse for ages.

Didn't know that either. It was on McKelvie Parade on a Laidback tour when a fat man slumped on a bench tried to insult us by shouting, "Lazy!"

Wildlife spot for me, two days ago: rabbit darted in front of me as I left the Corstorphine cycle path to go up to Pinkhill.

I have been seeing a little bunch of Bullfinches regularly in Craigmillar. Added to my regular little group of cheeky sparrows two minutes before.

Signs of spring coming. The birds were singing their hearts out this am. Green shoots under the trees near the Esk.

  18. First ever Velvet Scoter for me off the coast between the Pans and Musselburgh (spotted by Kaputnik with his bins)

And a nice Wigeon pair in Musselburgh

Saw a merganser of some variety on the canal nr Yeaman Place last Saturday. very light coloured feathers on back - a female? was rather surprised to see it, but the crest was very identifiable, and it dived!

Gosh. I was sure it was a merganser - the deep red crest seemed just right from memory, and the size too, but your picture does make me wonder.

Saw that around the first bridge around two weeks ago. Got excited as I thought it was a RBM but didn't get the chance for a good look.
Anth you must have some collection of photos.

  23. I've only seen one red breasted merganser before, and it was at a distance...

There are certainly a lot of Goosanders on the Water of Leith, not sure about the canal! Just guessing really.... :P

Mabs, I run EdinburghWildlife so have been building up quite an album of bird and animal photos. :) Against all my better judgement I'm keeping a year photo list - I think I'm up to 58 birds or so (need to add in a recent nice Black Headed Gull shot (now that some have their mating heads on) and today's Velvet Scoter).

Got to see the Icelandic Gul up at Dunsapie Loch.
I'm pretty sure I saw a pair of tree pippits but most likely just meadow's.

The ranger was saying he heard a skylark this morning and alongside the geese heading north most definately a sign spring has perhaps sprung!

Another sign of spring, the blue tits are getting feisty too. Noisy wee things!

I often see Gooseanders on the canal. Mergs are more of a sea duck and I have only ever seen them there though apparently they do range about.

Can't mind his name, Matt perhaps?
He had long hair, a slight beard and an enthusiastic and inspiring attitude to life.

  28. Sometimes the wildlife just comes to you. Sat down at the computer for the first time tonight and this young chap appeared 30 seconds later. Luckily I had the camera to hand as I was just about to get some bird photos off it!

He'd been chased from our garden the previous night by our tiny little feisty cat...

I'll say it again Anth but that pics a keeper! Something about it..

Spotted my first ever Tree Sparrow today on the edge of the canal/harrison park.
    Nice wee bird.

  30. Couple of Buzzards over Craigmillar Castle Park on a lunchtime ride out from work today...

Earlier before the start of the working day was out with the telescope doing some digiscoping of the nesting Herons at Duddingston Loch.

    And a bonus Cormorant

All places very very easy to ride to! Even came back from CCP at lunchtime trying a new (to me) route along(ish) the railway line from Old Dalkeith Road.
