Three Goosander on the canal yesterday morning. My first of the winter. One had a brown (rather than red) head - is that a juvenile?

Only a short glimpse as it flew across the beam of my lights but pretty sure I saw a barn owl tonight. Top of Harlaw Road.

I have finally spotted a kingfisher. By the Esk near the electric bridge in Musselburgh. Unmistakeable colour.

Not one but two sparrowhawks circling the street as I left for work yesterday morning. An owl calling in the street just now.

A good handful of red grouse heard & seen up on Hare Hill today, including a couple flying right overhead and one posing very handsomely on a nearby dyke. Plus 30+ lovely, noisy, whooper swans on the reservoir (the western bits by the bridge to the avenue), three startled snipe a-squelching, and a couple of wrens dotting in and out of a wall.

Another sparrowhawk over the house a few mins ago. We go for months at a time without seeing one.

WFH today, my afternoon was brightened by a visit to the feeder from a small party of long tailed tits. When they weren't on the feeder they were hopping around the bare branches of an acer, looking absolutely wonderful.

Green parrots in Battersea Park and then foxes on the beach at Hastings Old Town while I was away last week.

Had to rescue a deer this afternoon, it had got a hind leg twisted in a barbed wire fence, not far from Buteland Farm. The poor thing was quite distressed, I tried to free it but couldn't on my own so retraced up to the farm and sought help there. Fortunately one of their staff was able to drop what they were doing and help out, we got it free and it ran off ok so no broken bones. It did have quite a nasty cut from the barbed wire, but there wasn't much we could do about that.

A man goes into a pet shop and asks to buy a pet wasp. The pet shop owner is incredulous and says. Don"t be daft, we don't sell wasps, you can't have a wasp,as a pet. The man says, that's funny, there's one on the window

@Stickman whilst I can appreciate the effort involved in capturing that picture of the kingfisher diving into its own reflection, I much prefer many of his other pictures.

At least one comorant fishing on the canal this morning. If it was just one, then its first dive was impressive; I spotted it when it went under as I was heading around the corner from the Calder Road Bridge and then saw one re-emerge on the far side of the Scott Russell Aqueduct.

    John stonehouse went swimming
Cause his life was a failure
    He went in at Miami
    And came out at Australia

I saw the cormorant diving the other day too but did not see it come back up, they can swim a good league hence under water

I was hopeful of a kingfisher spot this morning but no luck, although I did see one of the nearly fully grown cygnets having a bit of a stand off with the cormorant.

For some reason my kingfishey sense was tingling as I approached Kingsknowe this morning; sure enough there was a kingfisher perched on a branch on the far side of the canal between the rail bridge and the train station. It is the first time that I've made a spot in this area.

I wonder if my brain is interpreting irridescent blue in the far distance, making me think of kingfishers before I'm consciously aware that I've actually 'spotted' one?

Took the bus to Ocean Terminal today and walked back to Colinton via the WoL. Sightings included dabchick, quite a few goosanders ( the creamy peach pink/orange off white of the males looking magnificent in the dull winter light), a solitary female goldeneye, a gs woodpecker and lots of dippers. Was talking to the lady at the WoL visitor centre hearing all about their numerous kingfishers and the odd otter. Alas, no sign of either for me today. Or ever, in fact.

I startled a dopping (I Googled for the collective noun and this came up) of goosanders using my ding-dong bell as I cycled under the Yeaman Place canal bridge earlier.
