I've joined the group and am now feeling a bit pathetic at the distances I'm covering now I can see what everyone else is getting up to. Oh well I'm QOM on 1 segment, just don't let it be know that the only reason for this is I'm the only girl to have done it!

I am using it principally to compete against myself. There is always someone faster ...

Tomorrow on the St Abbs run I will have a go at uploading the GPX track from my Etrex. I suspect it will be rather time consuming but at least I will save the phone battery.

    Amir,

    Is this what you have?

I have one but no download cable. Are they easy to get the gpx off? I'll bring mine.

You will need some mechanism to download to your PC. I have a cable. Mine is a Legend HCx.

There is a Strava support article available.

The photo uploading issue appears to be a bug:

    https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/21483552-bug-profile-picture-uploader-issue

"Sorry for the trouble - but we are currently experiencing an issue with the Profile picture uploader. The picture uploader to add or change your profile picture is not working at the moment. You can remove your profile photo, but not add or change.

A bug has been filed and we hope to have this corrected soon.

We appreciate your patience while we get this sorted out!

  6. Phew, after a lunchtime zip across the city, second on Johnston Terrace (8 seconds, damn you!), and 4th on Market Street.

I've concluded that on long drags of climbs I only get up through sheer bloody-mindedness, which does not involve speed, but on short sharp climbs, perhaps it's the years of having ridden fixed, I just bung it in a big gear and turn that until the legs explode.

Which doesn't mean I'd be any good on a hill climb, they tend to last longer than half a mile.

I was wondering why hardly anyone had pictures.

I am not so good on short sharp climbs - having stick like legs.

Well shoot, I've uploaded a few GPX tracks for some fun sprint sections in town. I can't log in at work because this computer only has IE7 and the Strava website doesn't work.

The photo bug has been sorted now. I have put a picture up for the CCE Stava group. Let me know if you have a better one.

Ok who's Theo Andrew? You're about a minute quicker than me on the Arthurs Seat climb and I was really going for it (for me) yesterday.

    Earthowned = Theo Andrew

(It's an anagram in case you were wondering ;-)

I try not to look at the leaderboards too much as there's always someone quicker. Yesterday I was overtaken by an older gentleman who made me look like I was going backwards. I guess its inspirational in its own way!

Meh, there are some fast people out there!

Does anyone know if there's a simple way to see "all the segments I've ridden" (a bit like the obvious list for KOMs you hold, which isn't much use since I'm not interested in those!)

Back from Skye early and think a bit of Strava-ing could be just what the doctor ordered...

I've not found that yet, no. Their UI is a bit... odd. It takes a bit of getting used to in order to find certain things, I've found. I mean, I think I'm used to it now, but it wasn't that obvious to begin with.

If it doesn't wake you going up, you're in trouble on the return downwards.

Need to have a go myself for QOM on there. I shan't be posting a time like 1'24" though! That's insanely quick.

Oooh, Observatory Hill is a belter.

Signing up for the CCE group now. I haven't uploaded anything to Strava to date but may bide my time.... :D

Or can I upload historic efforts from the last couple of years so I don't have to bother riding the hills again? ;)

You can email in your previous rides, none of mine were as quick as the ones I knew were being timed!

That's a good point, Steveo. I guess unless you're in severe distress and/or pain by the end of the segment it probably isn't a good time. :D

Hmmm. Well, I joined. I'm having problems uploading old data, but it seems to have uploaded the run I did yesterday . As a cycle. And there are a couple of "segments" on it, and I'm not the slowest... :o) I have to assume that the others at my end of the timescale were running as well...

I'm actually tempted to report these two segments as they are along the canal and I don't think the canal towpath is a place for trying to set fast times.

Well, there's an equally valid argument that the public roads are no place at all for unlicenced and uninsured racing, especially without signage and a risk assessment for motorists and other passers-by.

    Seriously.

People on the canal have no less a right to expect people to take due care as people in town (or out of town for that matter).

Imagine if commuter motorists were on "Strava Driving"?

I'm starting to think that Strava creates segments itself. There's one on the way to my daughter's nursery where I am King of the Mountains but only because no one else has ridden it and I didn't create it. I think Strava has created it because it's a hill and because I've ridden it a lot.

If Strava creates them then people will record times against them whether they like it or not. They don't need to be trying or racing.

Strava segments have completely transformed my commute (for the better). For instance, I now welcome hitting a red light at the top of Leith St because it lets me recover before the charge up the bridges - no incentive to charge junctions before the green ends because you'll be knackered before the next segment even starts!

Yep, there's a segment on the Union Canal and the last time I looked, the KOM had averaged over 20mph. This on a stretch which has 6mph signs on it (never quite sure whether that's for the path or the canal, mind you). But averaging 20mph on that path is just mentally dangerous, and should be flagged and taken down.

Yay! I'm last on that segment. That's from the day I pootled from Edinburgh to Bathgate with my son.
