The iPhone accuracy seems to leave a little bit to be desired for creating segments, particularly elevation it's accuracy is only +-10m so makes Edinburgh's 'wee hills' like the climb either way over Abbeymount negligible on the chart.
I would be much obliged if somebody with a more accurate device could capture and segment Easter Rd - Abbeymount, Holyrood - Abbeymount and Holyrood to St Mary's St because I'm over them every time I go to the gym :)

Good work, Dave. That is a brute of a hill. :)

Thanks, very happy esp given today's other activities!
Unplugged the dynamo though so now feeling overkeen. Hopefully it will stand until I get some lower gears!
My xperia active has barometer as well as ant+ - apparently it can do calls & txt too, not sure about that!

@Klaxon
My comparison of iPhone and Garmin Edge 500 confirms that the iPhone is, indeed, a bit shit at keeping you close enough to the path to ensure Strava recognises segments. Sadly, I'm not really round that way to plod up those hills for you with the Garmin.Posted 12 years ago # -
Ty Instography :)
I've not had too bad an experience at segments being logged, there must be a tolerance in there, but trying to set some this afternoon the tracks were all over.
My car sat nav has a logging function of some description but I do know it's not the easiest to get to and is just one long stream rather than start/stop. Even so maybe I'll have a go just sticking it in the pack and 'doing the area' some day or another

The Edge is definitely better, but I've found that putting my phone on the handlebars has led to much better traces, although I did miss a segment on the Roseburn yesterday due to it drifting a few metres to the side.
Check http://app.strava.com/activities/10707010 (zoom in on the northern bit on the tree-lined paths with satellite mode, it's not too awful)
When I had it in a pocket or backpack they were much worse at times.

OK finally checked this strava thing out..... I can see how this could get addictive. First time out and got 5th over all for the Arthur's seat downhill section and 7th overall for roundabout to roundabout and 7th for meadows to bruntsfield links cycle path.

CityCyclingEdinburgh is, by far, the biggest cycling club on Strava in these parts. Surprising. I guess ERC and the other "pros" aren't that involved yet?
I most like the uphill sections just because they require a basic bike and you can compete solo. East Lothian is dominated by chaingangs with tailwinds setting all the KOMs. Unless you can do a mile or two at over 30mph you won't get close even on the sprints.
Posted 12 years ago # -
There is an ERC club and some of the ERC riders are represented in the leaderboards. However you do need to carry extra weight to "play" :)
Posted 12 years ago # -
BTW the CCE club currently has 23 members - ERC has 20.
Ooh and there is more than one ERC "club" - Edinburgh RC has 2 members
Posted 12 years ago # -
Ah *lightbulb moment* that's what they mean about whatever-it-is "sprint" - its a roadie thing.

My iPhone isn't particularly accurate, but that's mainly because it's in my pocket, hence GPS can't get such a good fix.
My Garmin Edge 800 on my handlebars is unbelievably accurate. So much so that there's one segment I regularly ride on which rarely matches the segment because whoever created it did so with (no doubt) some kind of smart phone and you can clearly see that the segment is about 50 feet away from the cycle path. My GPS track is on the cycle path, hence Strava thinks I'm not doing the same course. It's a PITA.

The average speed for my two hour ride yesterday was the same to 0.1mph on both Strava and my Cateye computer. I rode through seven East Lothian segments and those sprint sections along the coast are ridiculously fast. I tried for two of them and got nowhere then placed on three in the back lanes I didn't know were there.

Any one know if you can edit a gpx? My latest upload has started somewhere in the middle of the pentlands them jumped in to town. Not sure if it's added the milage though.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Yes, in basic text editor.
(TextEdit on Mac)
Posted 12 years ago # -
Excel from 2003 onwards ought to be able to cope with a .GPX and open it as XML for simple editing...

Cheers guys, had a dig around on the site and there is crop option which helps removed the duff data at the start of some tracks.

First page! Life online is now complete.
no PS, but getting better: http://app.strava.com/rides/11100251#194332658
39-18t vastly better than 39-16t, although I still had to come out of the saddle, so there's latent improvement hiding in there.

It's *all* about the bike, Dave. ;) I think I changed gear three times on my PR go - down one for the steepest bit, then a couple of changes up as the gradient reduces on the final corner. That would be more than enough to make up those 10 seconds...
Posted 12 years ago # -
I changed gear once on my run, hit the hill and stuck it in the lowest gear....
I may not be cut out for competitive cycling. :D

Mildly annoying that you can't export other people's rides to GPX or TCX so that you can follow them. For instance, Tom's ride yesterday looks like a nice challenging way for me to make up some of the deficit for June that I'm accumulating but there's no option to export.
Found a website that allows you to export any ride as GPX or TCX.

Family of cyclist to sue Strava http://bit.ly/MBpTPT It entices faster rides—but "responsible for ensuring crowd-sourced routes are safe"?

Jeezso...

I'm sure that will mean something to some people.
Seems to be a case of paid for bits coming to the free app - so what's worth paying for.
I was going to ask a few days ago if anyone had 'upgraded' to the paid-for app.
Now I suppose it's a question of 'anyone paid and now wish they hadn't?'
Posted 12 years ago # -
The only advantage I can see from the paid upgrade is that instead of being the slowest person up Arthur's Seat I can filter the results to be the fastest old fat guy up Arthur's Seat. You pay to delude yourself.
Posted 12 years ago # -
One of the things I love about strava is that it is so easy to capture the data, but I wish it was a bit easier to export out in a useful format.
I've been looking at my performance on the arthur's seat uphill section over the last 85 days and reckon that over that time period I'm improving by approx 0.5 secs a day:

At this rate I'll catch up with the times that PS is setting in a few years time ;-)

What Strava REALLY needs is a little hologramatic projection of a ghost of your best time like on computer games...
Posted 12 years ago # -
Now THAT would be a superb paid for feature!
Posted 12 years ago # -
A handy feature would be the option to keep your data to yourself, so that you can use it for something useful such as comparing commuting-speed performance over a range of commuting-route segments over a longish period whilst not contributing data to the general pool to which competitive people can then try and post faster times in order to declare themselves Hill Captain. Even simply being able to classify your uploads or segments thereof as competing/non-competing or commuting/racing/pootling would permit people who are not racing to not find themselves nevertheless being raced, as can all-too-easily happen on a live road when people take SCR seriously.
