I don't consider myself speedy but it is nice to know someone out there thinks the user ID suggests a bit of speed, usual cruising speed along the rail path is around 18mp some bursts of 24 and some dips to 15
My computer might have lied to me but after coming over the Ferry Rd bridge heading East I apparently hit 30 one morning...

Does this mean there are very few people on here use this particular path?

"I did have a roadie with muscly legs pass me this morning and briefly considered a chase. But only briefly. "

Saw the same guy on the way home too, what are the chances of that?

Presumably quite high if you work the same hours.

    Maybe you should wave...

I don't use the Roseburn path as much as I used to, it's a bit of a longer trip (10 miles VS 4 for the direct option).

Got my hopes up, then realised I was going in the opposite direction.

I did, however, get spotted in traffic by a chap I know on the way home:

    "makes you look about 14"

Regular cycling makes most people look 10 years younger...

@Dave - Me too, although substitute 10:4 ratio to 5:2 but I choose the longer option for the exercise benefit

I think I scored 3 or 4 points off a girl on a fast road bike with the full lycra thing going on, what's more the guy who had joined me for the second time in a week was on an MTB with sus so he must have picked up 4 or 5 points. I could really get too carried away with this...

Pretty low though since I tend to leave at different times. I won't wave since he looked a bit tough.

"Got my hopes up, then realised I was going in the opposite direction."

Yes, I think turning round and chasing people going in the opposite direction is probably taking it a bit too far. ;-)

Perhaps we should invent a new symbol for 'OK chase me then' - for people who are up for a bit of competing...

At least that way you won't feel guilty about 'stalking' or 'pushing' someone to go faster than they wanted to.

"or just wear a high vis vest with "c'mon!" on the back in large black marker..."

problem there is it might not just be an invitation to people on bicycles

Couldn't avoid having a commuter rage race with a chap this morning. He passed me standing on the pedals and looking like it was really hard work and then slowed down so much it required him changing down a gear. I stopped pedalling but was bearing down on him just freewheeling. So I had to go past! I'm sure this thread has been a bad influence. :-)

Very bad influence... I've started stalking unsuspecting road riders, managed a beaut last Wednesday, a road race type bike wearing full cycleborg kit came past me on Lanark road heading out of Currie towards Colinton, I was on a hybrid in working clothes (boots combat trousers, oh and a cycling waterproof but bareheaded), oh and I had two full panniers on so I was in the points (lol).
I realised he was panting just that bit too hard, and I was bimbling so once he'd made his pass I spun up, caught him up then followed him to Redford Road where I passed him back and zipped off :-D
Silly, pointless, childish... yup, but it put a big smile on my face :-)
(I'm in trouble when I start using the Giant for commuting tho! :-/ )

When you commute on the giant do you sit on his shoulders or in the palm of his hand?

I was very good this morning, ambled in not letting my self be baited by the (fast) roady who passed me at western corner, got in to the office marginally less sweaty than normal only to find out the showers were COLD! really really COLD! Take your breath away cold, got rinsed off and washed my hair but only just, Hardy type i am not.

Should have just gone full whack at least i'd need cooling off if i had.

I try to restrict my competitive urges to riding over the footbridge at Brunston Station where most other cyclists get off and push. It's not exactly Kenny MacAskill type skills but it is NCR1 and it shouldn't really have steps and kerbs.

You can avoid this bridge by zipping up to Milton Rd E and back.

"You can avoid this bridge by zipping up to Milton Rd E and back."

True, but that (flat) route really isn't great - road with no pavement and giant Leylandii then narrow path with obscured corners.

However IF you take kids on the bridge make sure they don't ride down unless they have working brakes and the right skills...

PERHAPS something will be done when/if Big W is revamped.

I was overtooken on my way home last night along London Road, by some bloke whizzing past me with both hands in his pockets - but I had two panniers, so I think that makes us even. I think he must have gone right to the end of London Road and down Leith Walk because as I was heading along Brunswick Road, he was coming the opposite way.

Indeed, now that would be something. I saw about a dozen of those cycling police pass the harbour in Musselburgh last week heading out towards Prestonpans.

Yes, but then I'd miss the fun part. But that's worth remembering when I'm out with my children as the bridge is a major obstacle to an eight year old.

Yes, it would be a great spot for a skate-park.

chdot. I hadn't seen that. I'd like to see something like Farmer Jack's or Earthy there selling East Lothian organic produce. And a skate park - an indoor skate park even.

    Talk to your bank manager...

Will be interesting to see how the one in Ocean Terminal fares now there is Saughton.
