Riding to St. Abbs this weekend

Weather is looking grand this weekend, so I'm thoroughly tempted to do a much-put-off ride to St. Abbs and home on Saturday or Sunday.

I've never cycled past Dunbar, anyone got any route tips, roads to avoid, interesting things to see along the way?

And if anyone's feeling adventurous and like a rather long cycle on Saturday, you would be welcome to join me.

The main issue seems to be if you want to try and go around the coast, then once you get past Dunbar it looks near impossible to avoid the A1 for certain sections, without making silly dog-legs.

I'd like to go out around the coast as I love that section, perhaps come back inland along Whiteadder water and the reservoir, coming down Redstane Rigg from the top down.

Looks like about 105 miles return journey mapped from Peter's Yard.

Could easily knock 5-10 miles off of that by avoiding some of the coast around North Berwick (but then you miss the headland out at Tantallon, which is usually spectuacular on a nice day)

You could head for Pitcox then take the road to Little Spott and then Spott - watch for the Witch's Stone. Climb Spott Loan to the Brunt then take a sharp left to Innerwick - look for the Jubilee Well on the way. Stay in the hills through Oldhamstocks to rejoin the main road to St Abbs Head at Cockburnspath. That's a fair old ride. I like to join you for part of it but will have to check what's going on.

@Tom do let me know. I had planned passing through Musselburgh on way out, so could join you there. Think DaveC is also keen seeing as his big Audax had to be cancelled.

Please count me in! I have had the nod from the authorities (SWMBO), so I'm free to join you.

Notes, From mile 43 to Mile 44 could we ride south of the A1 on the quiet road? Is it a through road?

Other than this its only a mile and a half on the A1 and should be ok.

That is a fine old ride. I'm afraid I'll be trying to avoid falling off my Cube elsewhere on Saturday or I'd have been well up for it.

For my money, the other road back from Duns is more fun (as in some long steady climbs and long steady descents), but it would add a few more miles to the itinerary, which is probably not ideal given the length of the existing route.

I am very tempted. Are you planning to "pop" up to the lighthouse at St Abb's Head? I could bring some wee bins. If the haar is an issue perhaps the route could be reversed. What time would you start?

My complications are based on having a sportive the following weekend. - I have to consider the effect on Mrs Amir and also (to a lesser extent) how it fits into my almost nonexistent training plan.

I think there are some sections of cycle track beside the A1 around about there.

NCN 76 follows the line of the A1 at that point so there must be a path of some sort.

I reckon I ought to get a metric century under my belt before I try an imperial...

@Amir It should be cycleable out to the lighthouse, not really much further. Would be worth it after going all that way to add the extra mile or so on. It's a while since I've been up on the head. I've got a small pair of good bins I could bring too.

If the day is suffering from Haar we could reverse the route. Also, depending on what wind is doing it may well change.

I quite like Tom's suggestion of avoiding Dunbar and cutting a bit inland there, I couldn't map it last night as Mapmyride decided to have a moment.

Would probably want to start fairly early to get the best of the day, and get out of the busier parts while its still quiet.

Oh come on!! You'll never know if you don't try. The furthest I have ridden is ~200km or ~126miles. I was planning on doing 300km this weekend before my buddy had to bin it. Just get on the bike and ride with us. You won't get left behind! I won't allow that.

Kap, If we are doing a metric ton then I'd also prefer an early start, like 8am or such. I'm wondering if I should just ride in from Fife of take the train in. If you can finalise a start time I can work round the train timetable if required. If I cycle in from home I could add 32 miles which is over 200km and perhaps get a Randonner signed off. Receipts needed.

Looks like a great ride but 100 miles is double the distance i've gone before. Think I would have to build up to something like this. Enjoy!

I was thinking on leaving around 8AMish, gives a good length of day and we could hopefully be half way by lunch time.

Cool. I'll meet you at PY at 8am then.

C'mon Uberuce. Its not THAT far. If there is enough of a group you'll be pulled along. The more the merrier. As I said above I'll ensure no one is left behind, Crowriver can vouch for that.

I'm tempted to bring my new cycling cap to protect the hairless zones on my head - but DaveC is liable to fall off his bike laughing.

There are two good cafes at St Abbs - one at the NTS outside the village and one in the village at the bottom of the very steep hill.

BTW kaputnik "things to make more fluids with"= hydrogen?

Yes we will be conducting fuel cell research!

I was more thinking Nuun or Zero tabs to pop in water.

Oh C'mon Aid, I love that cap. It really cheered me up.

The cafe at St Abbs at the foot of the access road has Super Cullen Skink!. Thats my fave caf that is! It'll be full of tourists and divers, but service is very fast.

I have a access to 50ltr 'J cylinder' full of Helium, but I'm fresh out of Hydrogen. I'll just bring Zero Tablets and 'Hame Made' FlapJacks with 'Lashings and Lashings of goodness!'

@DaveC I forgot you were a part time frogman, then you will know that part of the world very well! Hope you know where the ice cream is good too.

the route has been updated using Tom's suggestion for heading via Spott, taking a slightly more inland route when past Aberlady, avoiding the beach-run traffic on A198 and only needing one very short crossing of the A1 at Cockburnspath.

Count me in. Shall I meet you at the Fisherrow harbour around 8.20 - 8.30ish? I like the route change btw.

Lovely. I'm sure there will be plenty of oportunity for ice creams along the way. Depending on how we get on, we could stop somewhere like Gifford or even Haddington for diner.
