This Sunday, Edinburgh Falcons travel along the M8 to take on their oldest rivals, Glasgow, in a challenge match to mark the official re-opening of the Cathkin Park track.
The last meeting held at Cathkin Park was in the Summer of 2007 when Alan Smith triumphed in an Individual meeting. Since then, the track, which lies in the shadows of what remains of the former home of Third Lanark FC, has lain unused. However, following a meeting with Glasgow Sport’s Cycling Development Officer, Jake Lovatt, to discuss a potential revival of the sport in the West of Scotland the circuit has been restored to its former glory by Glasgow stalwart Chic Mackie and a band of volunteers including a number of Falcons riders and officials. During this time, a new surface has been laid, the inner and outer kerb re-painted and a number of trees overhanging the track lopped. The result is a circuit which will hopefully produce some first-class racing this Sunday.
Falcons’ team manager Stevie Gilroy plans to field a side comprising the majority of the squad which has performed so well in the Northern Combination League this season. That will mean Cathkin Park debuts for youngsters Chris Lee, Dougie Morgan and Mark Lee. The Glasgow side will be comprised of mainly guest riders including current Scotland international Mikey Hewitson, and former internationals Neil MacPherson and Gavin Kennedy. Tapes are up at 1pm and admission is free.
