On friday evening, a gentleman reading this forum on his phone, on the tram to town. Sorry I didn't say "hello"... I was unsure what the etiquette was given that I probably shouldn't really have been looking (in my defence, what caught my eye was the familiar pic that is the header to this site... I ceased to look after that).

Compulsory reading when you're not cycling!

P.s.
How do you know he's "a gentleman"?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Errr what kind of gentleman are we talking about now? Is it some kind of euphemism I don't know about? I was just being polite, 'tis all.

"I was just being polite, 'tis all."
Agreed.

Bright light coming towards me in NMW - turned out to be Kim
Posted 9 years ago # -
I think I spotted fimm on NMW this evening while I was uprighting in the other direction (also with woolly hat). Recognised a moment too late to manage a greeting. :(
Posted 9 years ago # -
Arellcat I was certainly on NMW about 9pm or so. You must have been the cyclist with a pair of bright front lights? I can't tell you anything else about that person!

Moultoneer shepherding a child along Bellevue Road this morning.

fimm, yes, twin front lights. :) I recognised the small stature of your Brompton but then, lots of people have Bromptons.

I'd like to register a complaint. A well-known CCEer came face to face with me the other day in unexpected circumstances yet seems not to have spotted me. Harrumph. That is all.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I've been meaning to have a look at my PoP2014 footage in non-YouTube-resolution to see what you look like in case I ever bump into you.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I can say with some confidence that I have no idea at all what IWRATS* looks like.
* Many other CCEers are also available.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I only know what IWRATS looks like in the environs of a pub, I'm quite sure I could ride right past he and his "Ratty Nineties Hybrid(TM)" and not a flicker of recognition have.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I know what IWRATS looks like. I am not conscious of having ignored him recently. If it was me (were me?) I apologise.
While riding along Balcarres Street this evening I thought to myself "I haven't passed daisydaisy here recently". Then I did. She was conspicuous by bright light on head.
Posted 9 years ago # -
I am lucky enough to know what IWRATS looks like - I don't think it was me, but if it was I'd like to state my unreserved apologies….

Alas, it gets worse. Arellcat has dumped core memory of having chatted to me for five minutes....clearly I'm going to have to work on my first impression technique.
@Greenroofer, @algo, @kaputnik, worry not. I would have hailed all of you with a hearty happy new year. To be honest I'm not sure I'd have recognised myself under the odd set of circumstances that obtained.
Now, hands up who thinks I should fit my second ice tyre today?
Posted 9 years ago # -
Waves hand enthusiastically in the air (I fit mine and leave them on all winter, hate ice!!)
Posted 9 years ago # -
If you really hate ice I recommend flaming wheels but if that seems impractical, yes, go for the spikies.
Posted 9 years ago # -
To be fair, I don't actually hate the ice, I just hate falling on it. Nothing like falling on frozen ground to remind a biker how soft tarmac is!

I'll just assume I spotted a whole bunch of people that I don't know, by going the longer way round on segregated routes. Apologies to any "old hands" that I held up by stopping to check my phone for directions.
My particular thanks to the anonymous gent on the Brompton who led the way from Haymarket to the path entrance. Cheers!

My commute is now much less IWRATSy these days; the only place I could reasonably expect to Spot or be Spotted is where the B701 crosses it, but even that's a long shot. Thus, while I apologise if it was in fact me, I suspect it was not.

I spotted a woman walking down the road today at the cinema complex of fountainbridge. Now the pavement was icy and the road was clear but I do not think this was a good idea. Maybe if she had been on the other side walking into oncoming traffic it would have been alright? Maybe if she hadn't been texting on her phone? Perhaps her life will go on and on?

Cyclist on a white On One bullhorned fixie, dynamo light, going round Broomhouse roundabout, just before 8am. Possibly Dave? I was disguised as someone on a bus wishing he wasn't.
Oh, cyclist had Dave's face on the front of his head.

Last night as I walked home, the last three bikes to pass me were all 'family bikes' in some sense. First was once that I only saw quickly as it took a corner, but clearly had an occupied child seat on rear, panniers, and what looked like a very low/big porter rack, possibly with a 20" wheel on front. then a woman on bike with both front and rear kids seats, and finally a well-laden road bike with kid seat, panniers etc.
That, on a windy, icy, day on which I had decided not to cycle.
Signs of change?

I think I know the one (or one like it) that you mean. I think the brand was something like "Familybike" or similar. I once encountered the owner on the towpath pushing it as their dynamo wire had snapped and cut off their lights. We had a chat and I ended up lending my spare lights so they could get home quicker, and arranged they would drop them off at The Bike Works at some point in the future, which they did. Anyway they were headed for your part of town so could be the same?

"My commute is now much less IWRATSy these days"
Liking the adjectival use of the IWRATS persona. My life is now less IWRATSy than before, though. The canal phase has passed and Lilac Helmet Lady will have to find another gallant. That kingfisher can come out of the witness protection program too.
