Lunchtime today, in the Sheffield stands outside Scotmid in Portobello (one of the few supermarkets with decent cycle parking) I spied what I assumed was a really interesting kiddy back tandem: performance mountain bike style, olive green paintwork.. Rear saddle was missing so it was being ridden solo. I was about to fish in my bag for the phone to snap it when the owner came along. I complimented him on the tandem, and he corrected me saying it was a home made cargo bike. Only then did I see there were actually two bikes: he explained the rear half was a jump bike (the down tube had been sawn off and the rear stays of the MTB were bolted on to the rear bike BB). I was impressed at the ingenuity. Now all he needs is to fashion a really long rear rack and he'll have a Ute-like machine. Hub gears too (Nexus I think). Alas I was so busy chatting I forgot to ask if I could take a snap of this curious steed…

    Anyone on here?

I was waved at in Juniper Green today by one of the indistinguishable ERC peloton, was with Son of Gembo en route to his fencing class we were pushing the bikes at this point. (Sturmey Archer 3 spd - playing up must go to The Bike Chian for tune up and red apollo)

@jackson Priest - was teapot a Brown Betty?

@Gembo - you were graced by the race team none the less! They were out on a "social"* ride in the wild west.

    * their definition of social speed is somewhat different from others!

Kapps - nice - they were all chatting to each other and cruising along about steady 15 -16 mph - heading into town so on the home leg presumably but as you say fairly social.. West Lothian Clarion were also over in Balerno/Currie this a.m. about 9am. It didn't seem windy and I would have liked to be out but alas had the weans as annual NCT mums trip to Glasgow shopping, I pointed out there are shops in Edinburgh but this was scorned [still not back].

As I trudged home with my puncture (did I mention my puncture?) about ten-thirty this morning along the Silverknowes path, I was passed by two groups heading out of town: a primarily girly peleton the leader of whom had the good grace to ask if I was ok, followed shortly after by a boy band. Anyone on here involved, or know who they were?

@Its_me_knees The girls would have been the Hervelo ladies out on their regular Saturday morning West Lothian ride. Not sure about the chaps.

  10. Min hurtling towards the bottom of the Royal Mile as I began the slog in the opposite direction. Only had time for a call of Mornin' with my still-annoying 8.30 meeting to get to. On a Monday morning. Which the other side didn't turn up to.

There was talk on here a couple of weeks ago of hubshots being the trendy "new" photo... I hereby claim the furthest travelled hubshot taken when it was still niche and cool (I wish) back in 2010 in the Falkland Islands ;-))

(Viewable in a more reasonable size in the cycling in Edinburgh flickr group ;-))

    That is pretty cool Smudge.

"Min hurtling towards the bottom of the Royal Mile as I began the slog in the opposite direction."

Boo to 8.30 meetings. I was on my way to try and view the Mandarin (which I didn't sadly). I actually wasn't sure it was you to start with, I was confused by your light since it didn't look as bright as normal.

If only. There really was a Siamese, with a harness, attached to a very long bit of red and white woollen string type stuff. It ran between my son and I as we took in the view and startled us!

didn't look as bright as normal.

I had put my light on to run through Trinity and Rodney Street tunnels on Friday afternoon. A Dutch-or-similar sounding woman with a pram stopped me to compliment the light which was "brighter than the sun".

I think on Friday it probably was!

    @smudge - that's awesome!

But... Cycling in Falklands would surely be a more appropriate group!?

@kaputnik thanks, and true... the choice of group is a bit tenuous but then I don't know anyone who frequents that (Falklands) group (assuming it exists!) and I do cycle in Edinburgh as well..

Interesting that I was vaguely aware of hubshots, though not by name, from waaay back (hence the decision to get one on top of the gun), and yet a quick google sees most references to the trend from this year? A re-craze?

I think the batteries might be almost done, so was down on the lowest setting to save power (it was almost light be then anyway) meaning I could change the batteries at work rather than having to do so en route.

@smudge - yes I've seen a lot of "hubshots", particularly taken at end of a tour or other cycle challenge, but the name and the "doing them in random places a bit like planking but not planking thing" seems to be fresh for '11

Two different recumbent bikes on Sunday. First on Teviot Place at 0955, the second at Morningside Junction at about 1530.

I've never seen so many on the same day before. I suppose I could see more on one day by walking past the Laidback emporium...

*Won't be attempting a 'hubshot' with the Ute anytime soon.*

@custard, ah the halcyon days of delivery bikes. Now it's all white vans and aggro. Wonder if there was a 'delivery bike man' stereotype back then?

ERC Liberton contingent yesterday - came right past my door just as I was heading for a spin on The Whang. I caught up and took shelter from the wind. As I was peeling off at the West Calder/Harburn turn to get out of the wind then take backroads to Woolfords I thought I better take my turn at the front but this came over as a breakaway. I was reeled in.

Did get two good Fauldhouse stories from one of the riders [not technically repeatable under the rules]. I hooked up with him and his son on the return as they stay in Babby and had gone over to Libby to come all the way back so chose not to go other side of pentlands. They should have come with me to Woolfords, the model aeroplane fliers were out, there was a dead fox and the South Lanarkshire / David Crampsie strapline South Lanarkshire - Thiriving on Safe Driving had been painted over.

Me - spotted and photographed by chdot last night, riding down the wrong side of the canal towpath. Rather impressed by how WW2 my new-old helmet looks after digital magic. It's a matte grey Bell Faction I'd just bought that day at the car boot.

In answer to your question: I'd never thought of that bit of the canal as having sides by convention.

    Spooky!

I was there for about 20 waiting for bikes in both directions. This was it!

    Unlightened pic -

"I'd never thought of that bit of the canal as having sides by convention"

I'm sure you're right - not just canal, shared paths generally.

There are plenty of times when pedestrians mean that cyclists weave and end up on the right with a bike coming the other way.

But I know I can 'drift' to the right.

If I'm on the left and there's a bike coming straight at me (no pedestrians around) I expect other person to 'think left' - but it doesnt always work!

If it's kids I move out of their way, but adults...??

Last night, two folk, one on road, and one on mountain bike drafting each other up the uphill bit of the Forth Road bridge at over 15mph - in some respects fair play as I'll never be able to get over it at that speed!

This morning on the downhill bit as I was feathering the brakes to keep within the 15mph limit, bloke on Ridley flew past followed a minute later by bloke on Carrerra with Tri Bars going even faster.

Fifer's, there is a speed limit of 15mph imposed on cyclists on the bridge for good reason, please abide by it!.....Or as it's just a silly rule and no-body pays attention to it anyway, lets just abolish it, as Anth suggests we do in another thread.

Chambers Street sheffield stands, 11am today. Nice bike, at least a grand's worth. Not sure I'd leave it so casually parked! My humble Globe Vienna 2 hybrid parked alongside.
