Amir - I used to see the fortified bicycle occasionally but haven't seen it for years. I am assuming its the same one, the rider might have started a trend. I couldn't help thinking it must create a hell of a lot of wind resistance.

Yes - it didn't look too easy to ride. I am not sure of the advantage either (over a good set of mudguards).

Oh - one (dis/)advantage would be spottability

"Amir, sounds like the one I saw crossing the Lift Bridge on Monday."

Sorry - I have not been keeping up.

I reckon that's worth 50 on the odd-ometer but then again a non-cyclist might think that it is sensible ("if you can't afford a motorised vehicle, nothing wrong with pretending" - made-up quote).

Coming in along the canal this afternoon, we spotted a mountain bike with adapted handlebars, such that the rider, whose arm ended near her shoulder, could ride. Very clever and she seemed quite confident on it. We chatted briefly, but after we cycled on I wished I had checked out how the gearing and braking was arranged - probably only on the non-adapted handlebar, but I didn't actually see it.

I've got an early train the next morning, but if it works for others, I'd certainly drop by.

A family outing. One kid on a normalbike, and 3 people on an orange tandem (is 3 seats a tandem?). Saw it twice today around tollcross then grange road.

Chinese-ish chap on a red paperbike (not the laidback one, I hasten to add!) Spotted twice this afternoon, once heading wrong direction down Melville Drive cycle lane and then stopping in it to take some photos (I was on foot in the Links) and then later on pushing the wrong way up the Bank Street lane. I had passing "words" on this occasion as I was cycling the right way down it! He appeared to be trying to cross from outside Bank of Scotland, had pushed across then realised there's a high, stepped kerb and pedestrian fence there and foolishness had caused him to just keep heading up the hill.

Should have shouted "YOUR STUPID DONKEY!" but only thought of that later.

Odd use of cycle lane. Of course in many other places they are bi- directional but not here! Saw a girl riding Melville drive against oncoming traffic in dark. She did have lights but no roadsense. Or is it time to widen the lanes to make them two way on each side ;-)

I vote we close Melville Drive to cars at the weekend and make it 4 way! :D

I saw a variety of family groups, single riders and club riders out and about today while on my training ride up at Craigmillar castle park way. Lots of the wee Kids seemed to be enjoying their rides on a lovely day.

Was cleaning my bike by the Tunnel when I heard someone come off. Older lady coming up out the tunnel had misjudged something. I went to help but her husband was helping her and she was fine. Bike was ok. They rode off 10 mins later after a rest and some food. Also many people wheeling bikes today but all said they were "fine" when I asked if they needed tools. Rather confusing....

  25. Quite a few cycllists this morning with no lights, or rather puny little affairs. The latter would provide visibility in the dark, granted, but in the fog they're next to useless.

That said, I was on foot, which always affords even more opportunity to review driving. Lots of RLJing by cars this morning, and quite clearly a lot of post-school-holidays impatience.

There was no much slowing down given the conditions (never is?).

I was panicking somewhat this morning coming down from Gilmerton as my B & M Ixon IQ front light kept turning off - bad connnection somewhere combined with very bumpy surface. Perhaps I need to start carrying my spare.

  27. Actually, I would say that round the south road of the Park cars were getting closer down to the speed limit than normal (I had a lift through the Park to St Leonards).

In general I find the fog does, when really thick, slow people down. But that just makes the eejits who drive normally stand out more as total eejits, because there are always a few.
