  2. :(

I was speaking to a TV production person about three years back on this very notion, and was basically told it was 'too niche' (the BBC said virtually the same thing). Always have the ideas, but lack the contacts (or the celeb face) to make it happen.

Wonder who the production company are (I'll be most miffed if it's one of the ones I contacted).

Sorry Anth. Sensible move from ITV4 to try to hang on to some of the TdF audience who've become used to watching at around that time.

I guess timing is also an issue.

'The Cycle Show' starts next Mon (23/7) at 8pm on @ITV4. Anyone remember 'Chain Gang' (1994) presented by @carltonreid youtube.com/watch?v=EZ32pB…

BBC did a series on cycling more than 20 years ago. I remember watching an episode with George Longstaff in it (before I met the blessed George). I lived in London so that puts it '88-'91.

The new series is a chat show format, featuring celebrities who cycle alongside well-known names in cycling.

“This first series of eight half hour shows is like a pilot series. If viewers get behind this series there will be more chance of being able to make a second series, and perhaps a series with one hour per show.”

ITV4’s viewer number predictions were 250,000 viewers per show but, because of the Tour de France success, Fuller is hoping for closer to 500,000 viewers per show.

On tonight’s show hour-fixated Graeme Obree has a Rollapaluza roller race with one of the founding fathers of mountain biking Gary Fisher. The Roller Sprint Challenge will feature in every show, with a leader board tracking the results. Next week Eddy Merckx will be on the show (pedalling? You’ll have to tune in to find out).

Roller Sprint Challenge? It's sounding ominously like Top Gear except with bikes.

Nah, there was no section where they all get onto home made bikes and start riding backwards through Oxford Circus or riding along a motorway or something.

I quite enjoyed it. I'll give it another look next week, especially since they have Eddy Merkx.

    K. wanted to know why it was in a pub. I explained it was a bike shop where you could get coffee and cake. She liked that idea...a lot.

We'll miss the next two episodes. Will be interested to hear what you make of it. Hope there's some 'real' cyclists on it (ie utility bikes of course).

  12. Not a bad start, if not entirely engaging. Bit less background noise from the cafe might help - you could see Mansell and Obree having to crane forwards to hear the questions they were asked. First show (first few shows) will always be about finding its feet. 30 minutes is too short to fit everything in, but have to say the Box Hill segment was pretty dull; and Wayne Hemingway's bit about 'how to stay safe' was simply too lightweight - again there are time restraints, but that being the case maybe better to steer clear altogether? After al, I would imagine the majority of the audience are already cyclists - might be wrong...

SRD, bikes + cakes is Ronde territory down in Stockbridge. I really must finally go there one day - expensive, but I get the feeling Look Mum No Hands is a little 'trendy' too (and in London) so prices will be similarly high (their online menus show no prices).

Was always my city-centre bike shop plan, but you kinda need capital and backers and contacts - huge admiration for anyone starting up a bike shop, and then making it a success (I'm looking at you Bike Chain people).

yup, when i told her there was a place in edinburgh that did that already, she was keen to go. but i suspect it's not that family friendly...was definitely thinking something more casual.

MUCH better sound this week seems as if they have learned from last week. I liked that Eddy Merckx immediately said Fausto Coppi when asked who he would have most liked to race, that is what I thought too! Well, to them them race each other I mean. Not me..

I am interested to see what Anna Glowinski's extreme challenge in Edinburgh will be next week. Navigating NCN75 through the town centre?

  22. A definite improvement - they said they'd listen to comments, and that appears to have held true. The sound was much improved (heid mics probably helped), Merckx was an utter gent and star, and each of the segments was more interesting than last week. Still to rapid, but they've only got the 30 minute slot (which, they've mentioned, equates to 22 minutes of programming), so things like the Nearly Naked Men was a bit rushed, and the segway into bike fitting felt ridiculously forced. Lady Velo wasn't at her best niterviewing those guys, but unscripted in the studio she did much better.

Editorial policy is definitely have someone mention wearing a helmet (Kemp last night - it's notable that in the opening credits even the Boris Biker is lidded). Cynically I think that might have something to do with ChainReaction being a main sponsor (notable that the Cycle Show were plugging ChainReaction's bike fit pages at the moment the 'get a proper bike fitting' piece was being broadcast - I'd expect there's a bit of that every week).

Also interested in Anna's piece in Edinburgh, be intrigued to see what's going on. I've got in touch, okay that's from a personal 'look at me!' point of view, but it would appear with Lady Velo having been on there that they're looking at using guest presenters, but also to try and find out what the challenge she's doing is, just in case it's something you can go to watch.

Anna was up here taking part in the Red Bull Minidrome thing at the College of Art a couple of months ago - they may have an article on that, I guess?

  24. Aha, that'll be it. Damn.

She came across as a much better presenter than the chap going up Box Hill last week.

Rob Hayles (for it was he) usually comes across well on TV - eg, as in studio guest on Eurosport. For me it was the concept of the Box Hill article that didn't work (what was it actually trying to do?), rather than any deficiency in Rob's presenting.

  26. He reminds me of someone and I just can't put my finger on it. Simon Day I think.

EDIT: yep, Simon Day, something about his voice, and they look vaaaaaaaaguely similar.

    There are so many Min...

    • Doing a right turn at Hotel de Vin....

    • Passing an oncoming cyclist and avoiding pedestrians on the zig zag 'pram ramp' that crosses the approach road

    • Using the suggested NCN1 route from Meadows to St Leonards without dismounting
