"Bikes versus cars – it is an age-old conflict on Cambridge’s ancient streets. Most people enjoy cycling and many prefer two-wheeled transport to the four-wheeled variety. But people need cars too and need to be able to park them somewhere.

One of the biggest flashpoints in the bike-car battleground in recent years has been leafy Gilbert Road, used by many cyclists for commuting across the city. The road has cycleways, but theses are frequently blocked by parked vehicles.

That has enraged cycling campaigners, so much so a county council scheme has been drawn up for “improvements” aimed at sorting things out.

Cycling England, the body charged with the job of encouraging more people to cycle, has offered £400,000 to pay for the work."
