Wrong way round the high road has to be worth a try (although in winter I noticed lots of riders doing this anyway, when it was closed to cars).

  3. Have to say, that's quite a challenging hilly route!

There are going to be some cross drivers too, unless they close the roads.

  6. Innocent Path is a nice route, but could be interesting with so many people. Certainly on Pedal for Scotland the worst bits were when Sustrans off-road paths were entered onto.

EDIT: Especially if people are travelling in the other direction (other cyclists, dog walkers).

And the 'wrong side' downhill descent from Arthur's Seat could be.... interesting... with so many people and some wanting to go fast.

Still, I may well go along and soak up the atmosphere.

Not sure how 'family friendly' any of it really is - for (almost) complete novices.

Shame it's 'out of town' - presume most other Sky Rides, international versions, are more 'urban'(?)

Is this like any Sunday but on a Saturday? And with free bibs?

    http://www.goskyride.com/EdinburghSkyRide

"Join us for a fantastic traffic-free bike ride through Edinburgh where everyone's invited.

It's a great opportunity to experience some of your city's highlights in a very special atmosphere. Our route will take in some of Edinburgh's most impressive city centre landmarks.

There’s no official start point or start time, and you can ride as much or as little of the route as you like, and stop as many times as you want. Most people join in at one of the activation points along the route, where you’ll also find plenty of fun things to do whether you’re on a bike or not."

BTW I note Edith Bowman doesn't have a helmet on in her video

Helmets are only compulsory for under 16s on Sky Ride.

@chdot - Not sure how 'family friendly' any of it really is - for (almost) complete novices.

I see what you mean - there are substantial hills on every loop, and there appears to be no "out and back" option on the flatter sections.

I've made the following suggestions - out via Croft-an-Righ and either turn right to return via Duke's Walk, or left to return via Horse Wynd. I suspect the Tytler Gardens/Spring Gardens route would cause less "TRAFFIC CHAOS!", but neither are likely, given the low impact plan so far.

The alternative is to make the section from St Margaret's to the Dynamic Earth two way traffic, but that might be considered too much of a pinch point - at least there's a roundabout at one end and a triangle of road at the other to allow for turning.

"The alternative is to make the section from St Margaret's to the Dynamic Earth two way traffic"

I expect that will happen in reality - perhaps with the 'contra flow' on the pavement.

It's not really very inspiring is it? I was planning to take coxswean along on the tagalong, but I'm really not sure that it's worth the effort of dragging her all that way just to ride round Arthur's Seat.

I'd (naively, I suppose) assumed we'd be riding along Princes Street and parts of the Royal Mile and stuff. Now that would be worth travelling to and would be worth all the fuss and razzmatazz that I've seen for this ride.

Chris Hoy confirmed attending first Sky Ride Edinburgh, and will be there for several hours pressing the flesh etc! Yahoo, can't wait to glimpse those pins! "Oh what a size they are" (Shakespeare: Macbeth).

Hats used to be enforced on kids but I couldn't find that rule last year and the front page for the Edinburgh one says this:

"You might also think about bringing a helmet, a puncture repair kit / pump, a waterproof (our rides go ahead rain or shine), some snacks and a drink. And it’s fine to bring kids bike trailers too."

I didn't find anything stronger but it might be someplace else.

The Glasgow one was dead flat from the Green to the Riverside museum and back.

I know Edinburgh is hillier, but sending 'beginners' around Arthur's Seat is, er, choose your own word conveying 'less than sensible'.

Anyone actually planning to go? Chris Hoy and maltloaf are obvious atrractions, but then it's open doors day in Midlothian.

Yep, I'll be there, partially in return for the training British Cycling provided earlier in the year. Definitely for the morning, and perhaps for some of the afternoon too.

I'm going along, taking the whole family, although the toughest bit for us will be getting across town from Carrick Knowe, especially with our 7 year old on her wee BMX!

On Sky rides helmets are compulsory for under 16s. I emailed them to say that I was sorry but in that case we wouldn't be joining them. They replied to say, "OK".

Love to take my son, but I think its just too hilly. Sure there will be mucho traffic jams on all hills as kids stop and parents get off to help them.

Simply daft route that (seeing Hoy aside) people could almost do any old sunday.

    Insto,

You can just go along anyway sans hat. Murdoch doesn't own the road. I did that last year and nobody bothered. We also managed to not get SKY tabards which was another bonus.

Airdrie has event warnings up on the streets. I assumed it was the Pedal for Scotland but apparently a local minstrel group are commemorating something to do with a guy on a white horse which happened in Ireland a long time ago.
