OK, this is all beginning to be a bit last minute (blame Kim & SRD for inconveniently going away) but as we've mentioned in a couple of forums we're planning a series of 'pedal on postbox' events (hopefully) around the country on the 16th September. More details coming soon but there will definitely be events in Edinburgh (one of the Chris Hoy Golden Postboxes) and Glasgow (postbox outside the velodrome) and there are plans coming into place for Dumfries and hopefully Aberdeen too. We'll be distributing postcards at the end of Pedal for Scotland (hence the need for gazebo transportation ably organised by lionfish) as well as by post to anyone who wants to organise a local event.
Obviously most of you will be Edinburgh-based, (and I hope will be able to make it to the Edinburgh one) but for those not in Edinburgh (or if you know cyclists outside Edinburgh) would any of you be interested in planning your own? It won't take much - just pick a burning local cycling issue (like Leith Walk), get a bunch of people together who care about it, write a bunch of postcards(we can provide the postcards!) and arrange a 'flash posting' at a suitable postbox (if you've got a gold one in your area that would be great) and try and get your local rag interested. We can help with crafting press releases etc.
The whole thing is being tied around the whole Olympic and paralympic legacy and the 'Cycle Super Hoyways' idea, although you don't necessarily have to stick exactly to that, depending on what the issue is locally.
It's all a bit of a warm up for the impending budget which will be the point when we find out if the government's really interested in active travel or not. But it's also a way of spreading the word about POP and building the network for next year which will have to be bigger and better than POP28 ...
