Edinburgh won the right in September to host the new £30 million National Performance Centre for Sport.

The centre will be based at Heriot-Watt University and feature an indoor Hampden replica football pitch on top of arenas for sports including rugby, basketball and tennis.

City culture and sport convener Richard Lewis said winning the right for the athletics village had made it even harder to justify building a major indoor stadium at Meadowbank.

Not sure of the logic of that, but it demonstrates the problems of 'policy' based on bidding for discrete pots of money.

The consultation for the "cycling facilities" at Hunters Hall Park is in progress.

  3. "Meadowbank Stadium was originally built for the 1970 Commonwealth Games and has been labelled no longer “fit for use” by city officials approaching its 50th birthday."

Well no, it's not, which is why it needed refurbed.

"City culture and sport convener Richard Lewis said: “We do have to take a national look at this. Chris Hoy was training when he was young and having to go down to Manchester to use an international-class indoor facility. Now we’ve seen the emergence of his eponymous velodrome in Glasgow, people can go the 40 miles from Edinburgh to that.”"

There really is no concept at all that for many that really might not be viable. Hoy was lucky that he had the support of his family, and the means to do what he wanted to do. Whereas we're depriving that chance to so many youngsters, while building more squash courts...

@WC Actually the squash courts have been at Meadowbank since 1970s. So presumably not building more courts, just retaining them.

(They have been closed these past few years, due to the plaster falling off the walls and posing a risk to players. Such is the state to which Meadowbank has been run down)

  5. Aha, I was going off this in the article, "...as well as new squash courts..." but you're probably right, it likely just means new ones to replace the old knackered ones.

Make that 45, according to Google and double it, since you need to come back again. That's a significant amount of regular travelling, especially for parents with their kids.

It's a sad thing to think that track will disappear. At the very, very least, the boards should not be destroyed. They should be sent to museums (especially the National Museum), perhaps some gifted to significant Scottish riders who have competed or trained there and the rest auctioned off in aid of the Braveheart Cycling Fund or similar charity.

I'm still incredulous that the Jack Kane Centre is considered a good location to encourage people to take expensive bikes to!

  7. Thing is the Jack Kane option is a 'bike track', I think, rather than a velodrome?

Yes, that too. I meant to add that. It's poor attempt at making the less-informed Edinburgher think one is replacing the other when it's not.

A question for sports trivia quiz fans: how many reports have there been on the future of Edinburgh’s sports facilities in the last nine years? Answer: nine. Yes, one report every year tries to plan the future and still we’re arguing about it.

2.15 Disposal of excess land is critical to the funding of the project and this will need to be considered by Council. Option 3, the provision of a community stadium and/or indoor velodrome, would require significant additional funding and this would require to be addressed during the detailed feasibility work. However, dialogue with Scottish Rugby and Scottish Cycling will continue with a view to determining the potential for any additional funding packages.

Rumour has it that ERC has taken over the administration and running of the Velodrome and is very keen that it gets used a lot more than in the past.

Glasgow’s city deal is £500 million. Edinburgh’s needs are less, but our city – like Glasgow – still needs investment. We have some of the smartest politicians in the land in the City Chambers, strong leaders. MSPs committed to making Edinburgh better. A Green MSP who champions sport. Sadly we no longer have Margo, but this is surely a cause she would have championed. After September 18 – and not a day before, it’s too important for games, why not a new deal for Edinburgh. A world-class city should have infrastructure to match and help breed the new Chris Hoys and Allan Wellses.

It was announced two years ago that the velodrome adjacent to Meadowbank Stadium where Sir Chris Hoy learned his craft would be sold off and demolished. A new multi-million pound velodrome is to be built at Hunters Hall Park in the east of Edinburgh.

“Meadowbank is in a bit of a sorry state at the moment which is a bit sad, it has so much history and it’s such a fantastic venue. I have such fond memories of when it was looking a bit better.”

The problem is the council is still some £8m short, but even then there is a catch because the £35m the council claims to have includes £10m it will raise by selling off some of the land currently occupied by the Velodrome and back pitches for affordable housing . . . not on the open market, but to itself. The accounting wizardry involves the £10m being paid from the Housing Revenue Account which will then be covered by borrowing against future receipts. Magic money.
