Okay, having attended my first PY gathering and having enjoyed messing around on bikes, I am now a convert to the 'themed' approach.

Purely in my own selfish interest I hereby propose (arrogantly and no due respect for seniority) that we hold a gathering dedicated to Bicycles Made For Two (or more): the Tandem.

I'm confident that Roibeard will be happy to cruise by on the Pino, and SRD might grace us with the presence of the Helios. I'll bring the cheap'n'cheerful Raleigh Adventurer. Surely there must be more tandems out there: Laidback?

Even if you don't own (or can borrow) a tandem you can still have a laugh piloting or stoking/co-piloting the assembled duo-bicycles.

    Any takers?

Your confidence is well placed, at least on this occasion!

I'm up for this, assuming the date chosen suits.

I'm upfor it, but timing will be tricky as tandem usually in use 8-9ish for school run. Half-term possible, but Mr SRD away, so would have the kids on board.

Half term could be doable. Dunno about others?

N.B.:- For those not blessed with sprogs, half term is the week beginning 15 October.

Good idea. I can muster a couple.

Have a Nazca Quetzal - only one on this side of North Sea.

I'm happy to demo it although my co-pilot ideally has to be smaller / lighter than me. Min would be good as she's already ridden another LB tandem in the past ;-)

Also have a very nice 2nd hand Santana Vision with quite low step over that I'm very keen to sell or do a long term hire with. That could always go out with someone earlier in day or pick up the night before.

Then I have the Bernds semi-folding tandem....

Got too many tandems. Helios of course but you can see them every day(!)

I am tandemless, but I'll gladly serve as a spare stoker/pilot and could collect and transport one to the venue as LaidBack mentioned.

I think I'll keep my distance from yours, though Crowriver. For some reason I became a clumsy foolio in the vicinity of your Ute. I hit the pannier against the chair stack as you saw, as well as committing the unloading fail that Dave/DaveC witnessed, saved only by my former hobby. Shortly after there was a Bullitt reversing fail that Roibeard's swift reflexes saved the Ute from as well. Sorry...I won't be offended if you chalk out an Uberuce Exclusion Zone around the Adventurer.

Nonsense Uberuce. From our East Fortune showing it's clear that on a tandem we are world-beating material...

Didn't I almost hit you over the head with a parked airliner?

What? Bill Haley was at East Fortune and I missed him? Drat and double drat!

Came out of work to find note on my bike. Was afraid it was person I'd parked next to complaining. But no, it was someone wanting to arrange a test ride. Cool eh? Will be sure to invite them to our demo morning.

If they do want test ride I'll have to borrow one back from a new customer down Stockbridge way.
    Waiting on frames again...

@Uberuce, I have to say I was blissfully unaware of all these shenanigans until DaveC's comment earlier, and now your detailed confession.

The main thing is, the Ute survived to schlepp another day, no noticeable scratches, scars, dents.

No way I'm letting you near my cheapo tandem though unless you give guarantees written in your own blood...

Oh, I have a blood-drawing accident of some description at least once a week, I can write it in triplicate by the time of the tandemmoot.

Today's was a failure to unclip. Skinned knee and that stupid pinkie. I didn't have a contract paper to hand, though.

At Harrison park for girls foodie. Spotted spitfire & recombodna, and gave another dad & daughter a go on Helios.

That's twice now. Test run round Sciennes last night proved that it was possible to combine recumbancy and tandeming in the dark - and live. Helped to keep the Quetzal rolling really well and a lot of fun.

My co-pilot was very good and only slightly concerned that we couldn't go round corners in time! She got a free tea and a copy of Velo Vision for her efforts.

Now we need to set a date for event.

I'm hoping to be able to come along and play, and I wonder if I can/should persuade my boyfriend to come along to this as well? I do struggle to keep up with him sometimes and a tnadem would solve that - but right now we have neither the finances nor the space for one.

We did hire a mountain bike tandem once which was not very successful as it turned out to have a mechanical issue and had to go back to the hire place - we got 2 singles insead which was better to be honest. But I'd like to try a road tandem sometime.

I had a nice chat with the couple on the tandem on the Audax - they'd ridden singles for years and had got used to the tandem, so it can be done.

Either is good for me but I would prefer Friday.

Yes indeed I did survive and the Quetzal was only mildy terrifying. :-)

I can make either, and hereby volunteer to transport one fo LaidBack's devices to the meet, in the absence of my own tandem.

Ah, sorry folks, I won't be around next week (school half-term).

Which is not to say that you have to be Pino-less, as long as someone else is happy to be entrusted with my precioussss...

I could leave her in George Square, suitably secured, which means you wouldn't have to have storage space for her, just to promise to let her out for a run on the day itself, or more if you like!

  24. Roibeard, I'd happily garage it for you and take it on the day - would be interesting to try out, and possible cc feature on different tandemming options...

Yes... can make it. My trade in Santana Vision has been sold now so looks like it will be the Quetzal only. Circe have new model coming here called the Morpheus. Bit Pino-like but with front load carrier and seat swap over. Don't know if it will arrrive in time though...

    Posted 12 years ago #
  30. Given I've borrowed Roibeard's Pino I've kind of got to be there!
