As mentioned on another thread -

    "
Then the clocks go back, and the weather could get icy. So maybe no Audaxes until February's Tour of East Lothian (yes, it's back).

    "

So you can plan and plot on this thread.

No doubt existing practitioners will entice a few more CCEers when the weather/day length turns up.

We're actually in the 2012-2013 season now, for some reason it's been brought forward.

I'd encourage people to get out in the dark months, not only is riding in the dark in the middle of nowhere pretty neat, it also gives you a taste of the long rides without the mileage!

My plans for This Season are to complete an SR, A scottish SR. The 200 will be done on the 29th October 2012.

My plans are much less glorious! I intend doing the Tour of East Lothian and then attempting a 200 so at least I count as a (baby) Raddonneur (sp?) ;-)

At the risk of sounding like a broken record I'll transfer my recent post here...

I'm (hopefully) doing the Trossachs Permanent 100k from Bridge of Allen next week. Monday or Tuesday most likely. If only this lovely sunshine would stay for half term...

The following week, around 23rd, I'm doing a DIY 100k round the Forth. Again dependent on weather, but my route is approved so just wait for a half decent day when I'm not working...

Then the clocks go back, and the weather could get icy. So maybe no Audaxes until February's Tour of East Lothian (yes, it's back).

I'm aiming for Brevet 500 and 1000 awards this season, though as I'm doing them in 100k increments I may have to do quite a few perms and DIYs to make up the distance. Seems there are not that many 100k calendar events in Scotland (yet) for this season...

Will do some 200k events too, as and when. Aiming for 300k in 2014...

Sweet, and the Scottish 600 isn't EPE (always nice to do something different!)

Looks like a good route. I wonder if we can trick persuade Laid Back to do 400km before finishing with the route of the Erit Lass 200km? ;-)

My goal for this season is to replace the Raptobike and start breaking whatever it is in... because 2013-2014 (i.e. less than 12 months time) is the pre-qualifying season for PBP!

I'll maybe do a 100 next year, although I do like my solo rides. (mind you, at the speed I cycle it's likely to become a solo ride quite quickly ;) )

Should I aim for longer? I have done 100km a few times, but in slow times.

@Baldcyclist, if you can manage 15kph average speed (including control stops, tea and cake time) then you can do an Audax. I mean, I'm no Speedy Gonzalez but I manage to do it in time: a couple of years ago. I wouldn't have been so confident that I could.

Then it's pushing the next barrier: I'm comfortable doing 100k now, stretched to 160k the week before last and while I was slow I still finished with time to spare. Gradually my speed on the longer rides will improve, then I'll be ready for 200k (in March), and so on...

Thats Martin's 600 right Dave? I think even though its a monster of hillyness I prefer it to Preston n back or Nippin to Rippon as its never far from my home... incase I think I need to DNF or even just pop in for a stratigic sleep.

I really enjoyed the Three Glens Explorer. I want to do the Snow Roads - I have no good reason for this, I just do! So I will be looking out for suitable local audaxes - I really need to be able to get to them by public transport. Any suggestions? I should do at least one 200, I think...

Excuse the blatant self promotion but there is the Forth and Tay 200 from Dalmeny on 10 March which is easily reachable by bike, car, train, boat or plane. There's also the Dave Harris from Rosewell on the 24th March but I doubt LB let you take your bike on the bus so you probably have to cycle to the start.

Dave Harris highly recommended, although you do need to put a few miles in on the A7 at the finish, the first part of the ride is top notch (and very "scenic", ahem)

Put my entry in last week! ;-)

One of my criteria was being able to train it or easily cycle to the start (via NEP & A90 path). In contrast Rosewell is much further out for me from north east central Edinburgh (not distance as the crow flies, but in terms of ease of access). No train station, fine if you have a car, which I don't...

So do I - eventually. 2014 maybe, I'll see how I get on with a few 200k rides first.

Fiona, we are doing the New season Brevet on 20th Oct. If I take my car we could possibly take you also.

Any of the Audax experts got a dummies guide to permanents (and diy's)?
Also when I looked as permanents on the Audax UK website they were listed by the name of the creator(?) Which is not very helpful, is there a way to identify them by geography (ie. Pull out the local ones ;-))
    Thanks :-)

Ps, to anyone wondering about having a go, those who have seen me will confirm I'm not fast(!) Have a go at a 100km(or longer if you're confident) and you won't regret it!

Try Neil Fraser (Linlithgow), Martin Foley (Mussleburgh), Graeme Wyllie (Edinburgh) and Alex Patterson (Forfar). Lucy Taggart in Gala usually organises lots in the borders but I'm told she has cancelled nearly everything for this year.

Appologies if I have mispelt any names.

DaveC, that is very kind of you, but we are away the weekend of the 20th.

The Forth and Tay 200 in March is getting me interested, however. As a general rule, do these things tend to sell out? Should one try and get applications in in good time?

@Smudge, I can't claim to be an expert but there is not that much to figure out, I don't think. Here are the permanents in Scotland. I presume you've seen What is a permanent?

Some of the organisaers are based down south, but it should not matter as you will just receive a route sheet and a brevet card in the post.

DIYs are like riding a permanent, but you devise your own route and get it approved by the organiser before putting in your entry. Alex Pattison is the DIY Permanent organiser for Scotland.

The AUK website does have a somewhat strange idea of what compromises Scotland at times. It only lists one of my 3 perms despite them all being in Scotland and also seems to think some parts of Yorkshire have been annexed by the SNP.

@fimm, the chances of any events selling out are slim unless an extremely unlikely audax craze sweeps the country but it's a good idea to enter a few weeks before to help the organiser plan things.

@Cyclops, good point, yes a smattering of north east of England there right enough! I should have said I usually filter by length of route so rides from across the UK come up. Not quite ready for some of George Berwick's permanents!

    an extremely unlikely audax craze

CCE seems to be doing a fair job of starting one around here! ;-)

Yeah, another unexpected consequence of starting CCE.

How many did one or more this year?

How many for the first time?

Well, I haven't yet, but I am looking at next year. I might also try and convince my daughter, and my brother is keen to extend his cycling, so that could be another 3 adding to the craze.

Last year I did one (my first) largely as a result of the "CCE effect", this year I did two, next year hopefully more :-)

I've just signed up for the Guy Fawkes 200k from Galashiels on the 3rd of November. My jump from 70 miles to 100 miles wasn't too traumatic so I'm feeling slightly (perhaps overly) brave! I also love cycling (and running) in the dark, so very much looking forward to it.

    Anyone else on that one?

We're doing the 'other one', the New Season Brevet. It will be dark at the end of this so I'd recomend some sort of reflective clothing and some decent lights.

I plan to have my Dynamo lights, two extra rear lights, a spare front battery powered light and a head torch. I recently bought the Mavic Vision Vest as its the brightest and best suited to my cycling clothes I've seen. Its also avaliable as a Jersy and a Water resistant top. We were cycling last night up by the Pentlands reservours and people did comment on how bright and reflective my Mavic top is.

I'm doing the the Guy Fawkes, Doc PM. I think there are a few others as well. It'll be my last big fling before the winter. The new season one is too soon after my hols during which my cycling muscles have been wasting away.

Forecast is looking good for tomorrow, so I'm planning to ride the Trossachs 100k permanent. Hope the forecast is accurate, as the rest of the week looks dire!

Train up to Bridge of Allan in the morning, then off I go: Callander, Lochearnhead, across to Crieff then back down via Dunblane.

You know that a Fujin SLII is the perfect upgrade... There's one available to try on Sunday if you fancy...

I'm looking for some flattish 200+km rides come spring, but will be taking VM, so will prob do alone...
