also require substantial work to install especially for the track construction methods used in Edinburgh, which require substantially more time and cost to install than systems used elsewhere in Europe

Are you implying that it's possible to build a tram system slower and at greater cost than the one in Edinburgh? ;)

If that Mr McKeeman was paid for every time he gets his name in the chipwrapper, he could pay his £30,000 with ease! He certainly gets enough free advertising from Scotsman Publications.

I for one am thrilled that the property speculators are beginning to make big bucks again. Weren't they amongst those originally intended to be on the hook for a good contribution to the costs of the trams and somehow wriggled out of it?

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said it was believed the art could be construed as “inciting action of vandalism against the trams”.

Do Copymade have a contract for a certain number of column inches in the chipwrapper per month?

And for the record, clipart != art!

Can't be long before McKeeman gets a daily diary page and blog out of the EEN.

And I see his fellow Mouth of Haymarket, Alison Adamson-Ross of "let's have a rule against cycling on pavements even though one already exists" infamy gets yet another mention too.

    When's the wedding?

One of the state-of-the-art vehicles trundled into Haymarket station about 1pm after taking three hours to cover roughly four miles of the £776 million route.

    1.3mph? Not bad going.

The city council had kept today’s testing under wraps to avoid people flocking to sections of the line en masse to witness the vehicle entering the inner city limits.

Or... keen to avoid it being a laughing stock for going so slow, or a PR disaster if it broke down.

You think they should have done their first test at speed?

Of course, maybe even as fast as walking speed!

Reading the article, it appears they stopped by each overhead pole to ensure the measurements to the trams were correct. I suspect they were stopping every few 10's of meters for other measurements also.

Stumbled across this on Youtube. When travelling at speed, the bell doesn't give much warning to anyone at a crossing point. Are the bells automatic (presumably with a manual option) or fully manual?

Since when was Gogarburn pronounced "Go Gar Burn"?

    Possible local variation?

    I pronounce it

    Go - garburn

    That might be wrong too?

Rumour has it that a proto-beechhedge has been planted on the (cycle) desire line next to the steps on the way to the Cultins Road Underpass.

    Photos please.

I noticed that the pretendy cycle lane going down into Haymarket Yard was being burnt off this morning.

It's the same au-to-mat-ed voice that was being used on the Airlink buses but which I think has thankfully been dropped as I haven't heard it in some time. I think a computer just mashes together a selection of syllables to make up the necessary word.

What is so hard about simply getting someone to record a mere handful of stop names I don't know. Surely you don't need to pay someone with an Equity card for that?

    Yay, sort of.

So are they abandoning all pretence that there is any safe route down there on a bike or have they some wonderful new Cycle Route And Pedestrian Integration plan in mind. I feel that needs an acronym 0;-)

I wrote to Andrew Burns about this and he was good enough to send a lengthy but entirely unsatisfactory reply from those responsible. I'd like to think that he secretly agreed that this was a case of "some infrastrucure* is worth than no infrastructure at all" and wheels were put in motion to remove it.

    * = in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Can't say I've found it especially unsafe. Turning left from Haymarket allows you to cross the tracks at a good angle at the top. I only ever cross the first two tracks and ride down between the tramlines. At the bottom the curve of the tracks gets you a good angle if you don't go too far down. Coming up you don't need to cross the tracks at all (unless there's a van parked on the double yellows).

I suppose the lights will control the left turn once the trams are running although you might have to cross three tracks to get to the centre of the eastbound line. But having crossed it hundreds of times in all weathers I can't say that it's anything like the main Haymarket problem.

Haymarket Yards is fine. It's what's at the station is a nightmare!

@Kaputnik: an actress friend of mine is the voice of the announcements on the No 1 bus (and going to be rolled out to other new-style buses too, so I'm told). Don't know why they're not using her for the trams too. I'll ask her if she knows anything about it.
